Lodging
The castle rooms can be rented for up to 3 nights, arriving on September 30th and departing on October 3rd. The castle sleeps up to 99 people within the main castle, the wings, the lodges, and the stable apartments. The wings are suitable for groups/families who don’t mind utilizing a shared living area/bathrooms. Lodges and stables are 1 to 3 bedrooms allowing for more privacy. Each lodging arrangement has a living area and kitchenette for your use. Breakfast for the wings, lodges, and stables will be delivered each morning for self-catering. During your stay, some meals will be catered; however, for the ones that are not, feel free to explore the surrounding area or utilize the facilities provided. The castle grounds are ours for the duration of our stay. In the main castle, tea and coffee are readily available for your convenience along with a game room and pool table. There is a church, forests, walking trails, and a beautiful lake on the premises. We encourage you to wander around and escape into the beauty of Drumtochty. For information on activities in the area, please see the ‘Things to Do’ tab. When RSVPing for the wedding you will be asked your preference on lodging arrangements. We will do our best to cater to everyone’s preferences
How do I book a room?
Rooms are booked through the couple. You let us know you are interested and your room fee is added to our bill. Once rooms are assigned pricing per room will be given and the total is due 4 months before the Wedding (June 2024)
Where should I send my lodging fee?
Directly to the couple either cash, check, Venmo (jamie-daigle-1), PayPal (daiglebagel18@gmail.com), or CashApp (jamielee4444)
When should I get my passport?
If you know you are joining us for our big day, get your passports ASAP. They can take a few weeks to process and they last for 10 years (5 years for children). If you have a passport, check that expiration date as there is a '6 month rule' in which you are not permitted to travel for 6 months before your passport expires.
When should I book my flight?
Flights can be booked 11 months out so the earliest you can book a flight would be November of 2023. Google states the best time to buy international tickets is 5-6 months prior to your planned trip. There are agencies such as Expedia that will track the price of flights you are interested in. We've found booking further in advance gives us the best price, but it's recommended to browse on 'incognito' as the companies tend to bump the pricing of flights based off google searches/popularity
How long is the flight?
Flying from NJ/NY, a direct flight is about 7 hours. If you are flying American Airlines or British Airways it’s likely you will have a layover in London. Be mindful there are six major airports in London. While booking, we have seen connecting flights in two different airports which require transportation. During our 2022 visit, we had a 1.5 hr layover in London Heathrow (LHR) with enough time to get through customs, use the restroom, and grab a quick coffee before we had to board. Other airlines will utilize Dublin (if transferring flights is stressful to you this may be a good option as the airport is smaller and less hectic than LHR). We had a layover at the Dublin airport in 2016 and had a good experience there. Overall, with layovers you may be traveling for upwards of 10 hours.
What airport should I fly into?
The closest Airport is Aberdeen (ABZ). Please see the 'Travel' tab for more information
Should I rent a car?
Renting a car will depend on the plans for your trip and your comfort level. There is public transportation (cabs, trains, and Ubers in select locations) to get you from point A to point B. We've had successful trips to different locations across the country solely utilizing their public transit. Something to be mindful of are strikes that can occur with the Scottish railways which can delay or alter your plans significantly. We have not ever come into problems with this; however, it is something to be mindful of. Renting a car will give you a greater sense of freedom during your trip, not being bound to public transit schedules. Of course renting a car will be based off your comfort level as they drive on the opposite side of the road (duh!). If you are not comfortable with learning new road signs, rules of the road, and constantly remembering "stay to the left," renting a car may not be for you. Those who are interested in renting a car should also keep in mind that most rental cars in the UK come standard as manual transmission (shifting with the opposite hand on top of driving on the other side of the road), many companies do have an option for manual cars for a greater price. Both public transit and renting a car have their pros and cons. For additional information for travel, renting sites, etc. please see the 'Travel' tab.
What is the weather like?
Although we have not visited during the beginning of October, our visits during mid-end of September ranged from warm and sunny to cool and misty. I'd be prepared for a mix of different weathers. Expect temperatures in the 50s.
What is the time Difference?
Scotland is 5 hours ahead of the US (this depends on Daylights Savings time)
Currency Exchange
Currency can be done at your bank, a credit union, online agencies, and at the airport. Fees for exchanging to Great British Pounds (GBP) may vary with the airport likely being the most expensive. We do recommend bringing some physical currency with you. Most places accept cards and even give you the option to be billed in USD or GBP. Additionally, be mindful of fees to use your cards overseas. Contact your local bank for that information. Also, make sure to notify your bank of your expected travels so your account does not get flagged
Cell Phone Usage
The venue has wifi which you can use to access calls and texting (depending on your phone). If you are planning on traveling off site it may be beneficial to obtain international roaming. Pricing may vary depending on your carrier. Verizon and AT&T are both $10/day unlimited talk, text, and data. This is a good option if you plan to drive yourself anywhere with access to GPS
