Empire Mine State Historic Park is the site of one of the oldest, deepest, and richest gold mines in California. The park is in Grass Valley at 10791 East Empire Street. In operation for more than 100 years, the mine extracted 5.8 million ounces of gold before it closed in 1956. The park contains many of the mine’s buildings, the owner’s home and restored gardens, as well as the entrance to 367 miles of abandoned and flooded mine shafts. The park encompasses 856 acres of forested backcountry and fourteen miles of trails - including easy hikes (for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding) - in the park.
Jamie's family loves hiking here, it is a day after Thanksgiving tradition! You may schedule a 45 minute guided tour if interested in learning more about the mining history. Free parking on site.
Yuba River state park is extensive, and beautiful! Too many wonderful hiking trails and scenic points to note. Also great options for a river float or swim day.
Walk around the beautiful and historic Grass Valley to pass the time. Tons of shopping, local artisans, and great food. Get your fix of cute clothes and home goods at Yuba Blue, grab a pint at Thirsty Barrel Taphouse, or catch a movie at the Del Oro Theatre.
Just up the hill from Grass Valley, enjoy walking around this special place. Many great shops, food, and our favorite Nevada City Winery!

If you have a few extra days on hand, consider a short drive (just over an hour) to Lake Tahoe. This is a very special place to both Michael and Jamie. We enjoy many a long weekend there hiking, watching Lincoln swim and have the time of his life, lounging at the beach, and spending time with family. We have more recommendations, let us know if you plan to explore.
