During a birthday retreat/dumpling party, in the middle of covid, the matchmaking dynamic duo strike and suggest a set up for their two perpetually single friends who just happen to live on opposite sides of the globe.
After some consideration, and a busy 3 months, an online call was set up. It seemed to go well but both Kevin and Jemma were too polite and each thought the other wasn't interested. Thankfully their friends were ready to debrief and make sure meeting number two happened. From there they never looked back ....
Weekly video calls turned into daily video calls, occasional text messages turned into talking everyday. Online scrabble was an excuse to see each other more. Even power blackouts couldn't stop us from talking. Finally after enough time, Kevin falls for Jemma and asks her to be his girlfriend.
With limited holidays suitable for travelling to Canada, and the need to get a good deal on flights, a pragmatic Jemma shocked Kevin with a declaration that she was coming to Canada only 3 months after meeting. Thankfully friends from Hong Kong had just moved to Calgary providing a perfect home base and friends to catch up with for Jemma. Despite feeling the chill of Canadian wind on arrival, and a little miscommunication, the first in person meeting was a big success.
Kevin got a glimpse of what Jemma's life in Malaysia was like whilst also getting to enjoy a road trip together with our good friends and matchmakers up to Cameron highlands. Lots of games were played, good food was eaten, and importantly Kevin met Jemma's roommates Nikki and Dobie.
This time around Jemma got more of an understanding of Kevin's life in Canada as she stayed with his family. Kevin also introduced Jemma to unique cultural experiences such as baseball games, back yard barbecues, Tim Hortons, and not forgetting snow in July.
Kevin joined Jemma for a trip back home to Cornwall for Christmas enjoying a first visit to London before getting an insight into what her family looked like. Her family loved Kevin and he even got dragged into a family photo shoot.
Sometimes the best laid plans...fall apart when trying to scrapbook at 3:00am in the morning. Ideas were great and it all started with video messages from friends and family back home, photos and memories from three years together. Scenery and staging...needed a little help. Kevin got lost in Fish Creek Park. Then on a park bench between a parking lot and the highway, Kevin pops the question "Jemma will you marry me?" Rehearsed the night before. Time literally stops. She says yes. Kevin thinks what do I do next?
