Patrice and Jeremy’s journey began where all great love stories begin, with people arguing on the Internet. They first became digitally acquainted when one Facebook-friended the other after comments were made on something the writer Isaac Butler posted. It was an unlikely pairing, Jeremy being a performance critic and Patrice being a performance maker, but after various social media exchanges over the course of several months, and a brief meeting at a performance involving people in green body suits, an actual dog, and a shock collar (for humans, not the dog), their first tentative date was in an East Village bar on Black Friday, 2015. The rest, as they say, is history. Eight-odd years later, the pair have travelled widely together, survived the global pandemic shutdown without learning to hate one another, and now live in a comfortable Brooklyn apartment with their too-many cats. After all that time, it seemed a good enough idea to invite their close friends and family on a long trip to a desolate island in the North Atlantic on a full-moon Midsummer in 2024 to “make it official,” as they say, or at least to join them doing some of the things the love to do.
