The Medellín Alumbrados are an iconic Christmas tradition in the Colombian city of Medellín. It is a spectacle of lights and decorations that transforms the city during the festive season, usually from late November to early January.
During this period, Medellín is illuminated with impressive light installations that adorn the streets, parks, squares, buildings and emblematic monuments. Decorations often include elaborate figures and designs, with varied themes ranging from traditional Christmas motifs, such as trees, stars and reindeer, to more modern and abstract designs.

About 2 hours away from your hotel, 650 stairs lead you through a narrow crack up the steep slope of the impressive La Piedra Del Penol, or ‘The Big Guatape Rock’. At the top of the Guatape rock, the view is quite simply breathtaking and has to be one of the most amazing lookouts in all of Colombia. At 2,135 meters above sea level, this rock is a natural wonder and the perfect spot to enjoy panoramic views of Guatape Lake and this beautiful region. Jessica recommends wearing comfy shoes and sunscreen for this hike, while Houston will tell you it's an exhilarating workout worth the view.
A quick 15 minute Uber can take you to El Museo El Castillo was built in 1930 in the El Poblado area. It is a gothic-style building that evokes the medieval castles of Europe. Today it is one of the most important cultural centers of the city. It offers extensive french gardens and various exhibitions of porcelain and stained glass art, as well as antiques, paintings and sculptures.
Inaugurated in the year 2000, this attraction is located in the open air in heart of the city, El Centro. The star attractions of Plaza Botero are the famous bronze statutes that adorn the surroundings of the Museo de Antioquia. This is the only place in the world where renowned Colombian sculpture’s Fernando Botero’s works are displayed outdoors. While the city is safe it is not recommended to take street taxis in this area, only Uber from App and stay aware of your surroundings when outdoors in plaza as there have been some pocket picketing occasions. The museum shop or cafe can also order a taxi for you and provide you the tag number for verification purposes.
