Jill Prendergast owns a small, beloved children's bookstore in New York City called "The Shop Around the Corner," which she inherited from her mother. Kyle Ruggles is part of the Ruggles family, which owns a large chain of bookstores called "Ruggles Books." When a new Ruggles Books megastore opens nearby, Jill’s business is threatened, leading to tension between them.

Unbeknownst to each other, Kyle and Jill have been exchanging emails under the pseudonyms "NY152" (Kyle) and "Shopgirl" (Jill) after meeting in an online chat room. They share their thoughts, dreams, and frustrations with each other, forming a deep connection, although they agree to keep their real identities a secret.

As Kyle and Jill's real-life conflict intensifies, their online relationship grows stronger. Kyle eventually discovers that "Shopgirl" is Jill but chooses not to reveal his identity right away. Instead, he uses the knowledge to get closer to her, helping her through the struggles of her business and her personal life.
