Our Wedding

An omniscient narrator might say the story of Joey and me begins on the fateful night of August 24, 2019, or possibly a month later on September 20 when our relationship became official (on the hallowed ground of Zip Dip, no less). But I think that our story starts much earlier than that, all the way back to Halloween 2015: the first night Joey and I met. &nbsp;Halloween 2015:&nbsp;Yes, the first night we met. Joey might claim we met some other time before, but it simply isn’t true. I will die on this hill. And even if it is true that perhaps we were in the same place at the same time before, this is the night that I, Audrey, first spoke to him, Joey. I don’t remember much about this night (first night ever drinking, probably a lot of Mike’s Harder, sorry Dad), but I do have this crystal-clear memory of sitting on the floor of our friend's basement with some of my girlfriends, listening to Joey play guitar. We were like rats entranced by the Pied Piper, just tipsy high school girls gazing at this quiet boy strumming "Brown-Eyed Girl" on the guitar. I think we all fell a little in love with him in that moment.&nbsp; … fast forward to&nbsp;October 2017:&nbsp;At some point in the period I was single in our freshman year of college, Joey invited some of our friends and me to Indian Lake. Joey picked me up from my dorm and we drove in the Jeep (doors off, I was dazzled) to get supplies from his house and to pick up another friend. I remember feeling a little nervous beforehand because we hadn’t spent a lot of time together one-on-one and I thought we’d have awkward silence, but I was pleasantly surprised that we conversed so easily. I had always liked him and I always thought he was so cute, and I remember thinking “hmm, what about Joey?” But then that whole weekend our friends were trying to get him together with another girl, so I swallowed my disappointment and thought “oh well” to myself. &nbsp;…. fast forward to&nbsp;May 2019:&nbsp;Joey took our friends on yet another weekend lake trip, this time to Norris. At one point, Joey was driving a few of us somewhere, and he put on a song that was in my Alt Jams playlist that I was listening to heavily at the time (because I was edgy and ~not like other girls~). I remember being surprised and saying, “You like so-and-so?” And then we chatted a bit more about who we were listening to, and our tastes were compatible. I remember, clear as day, sitting in the back seat and thinking to myself, “God, I wish I could just date Joey.”&nbsp;The final nail in the coffin was when I saw Joey shirtless with a backwards hat riding a Jetski. I’m pretty sure I did a cartoon jaw drop AWOOGA. I was a goner. &nbsp;June – July 2019:&nbsp;As a newly single woman, I spent the summer of 2019 at Stone Lab on Lake Erie. I was running a lot on the island of Put-in-Bay, and I decided to start training for a marathon that fall. As I was running all those miles that summer in continuous loops around the island, I would imagine my triumphant return to Cincinnati. I pictured myself tan, in fantastic shape, and magically charming, ready to win Joey over.&nbsp; August 2019:&nbsp;At last, the time came for my glorious re-introduction to society. I don’t know how tan or charming I was (though I was in fantastic running shape), but I was ready to win him over. Except it all went wrong the night I first met up with all our friends. When I got to the Lyon Street house, I was uncharacteristically hugging everyone, and I went to hug Joey… AND I STEPPED ON HIS TOES. My stomach dropped like a ton of bricks. The thought flashed in huge red block letters: “That was your chance, and you ruined it.” It haunted me the rest of the night. Thankfully, all hope was not lost. Since we were both awkward and not forward with romantic intentions, my rough plan was to basically just be around him until he fell hopelessly in love with me (also known as Bidening, for any New Girl fans). That month we would have little interactions, and it started to seem like there was something happening between us. I felt like we were inching towards the precipice of a cliff, and I started to get scared. I remember talking with some friends on the deck of Woodys one night, confessing how I felt, and they encouraged me to go for it (shoutout to Wolf and Graham, I owe ya). &nbsp;Finally, we found ourselves at a party on August 24. We were huddled in the corner all night, talking and joking, and I remember being enveloped in a sense of inevitability. I knew where this was going, and it felt right. We walked home together, trailing behind the group as I really played up my tipsy stumble so I could lean on him. We walked up the steps to the Lyon house, and he paused, and he made his move.&nbsp; That next week, when he reached out to set up a first date, I started to get slight cold feet. I was just so scared because I knew he was such an amazing person and I was terrified of things ending poorly. The day of our first date, I had such intense butterflies of both anticipation and trepidation. I thought to myself, “Should I risk this? What if it doesn’t work out?” But then, I had this calm feeling wash over me.&nbsp;What if it does? The rest, as they say, is history.

"I've been idolizing my sister Grace for my entire life. That idolization used to take the form of stealing her Beanie Babies, but now it takes the form of me referring to her in wonder as "50% of me just walking around" Though really, it's more that I'm 50% of her just walking around, and that's the 50% better part of me- the best compliments I get are when people compare me to her. If you see Grace at the wedding, ask her about her favorite Bravo reality shows (bonus points for Traitors), the ghost in her previous house, or the disturbing childhood games we played."

"I hated Erica from the moment I met her in 2014, and that hatred blossomed into a beautiful friendship, as these things often do. Erica is the only person that I will willingly talk on the phone with for hours, as we did all through my time in Columbus for grad school. We've traveled across the country together, we've run countless races together, and we've been there for each other through our highest and lowest moments (for me, the poison ivy incident. if you know, you know). If you see Erica at the wedding, ask her about Waka Waka, her deep-abiding (and irrational) fear of rabies, and her Titanic knowledge."

"I've been friends with sweet Dee since freshman year of high school, and while our appearances may have changed (thank God for glow-ups), my love and mild obsession for her have not. Dee is one of the best people you will ever meet, hands down. If you see Dee at the wedding, ask her for Cincinnati restaurant recommendations, her favorite games to bring to bars, or about the time she literally stopped traffic."

"Sarah was the third member of the iconic Seton cross-country/track trio with Erica and me, and together we got into a whole heap of mischief. She likes to keep me humble by informing me that I smell like creamed corn. Considering how much she loves a night of dancing at Japp's, I expect Sarah to be front and center on the dance floor for the majority of the wedding. If you run into her, ask her about her dog child Poppy, Zambonis, or her thoughts on Joey's beard."

"Sara and I have been friends since first grade, even though I was a real weirdo- I think she befriended me out of pity and maybe fear? The best thing about Sara is that she is down to  do anything, anywhere, any time, no questions asked. She loves a STRONG brightly colored mixed drink and she will undoubtedly be one of the last people on the dance floor. If you run into Sara at the wedding, ask her about trashy TV show recommendations, her Latin prowess, or how she ~almost~ conquered her food allergy."

"Jane is the younger sister I never had and I get to be the sister she never had! (unfortunately for her) We've bonded at  countless Notre Dame games and family dinners when we've been outnumbered by the boys. Now Jane babysits my niece and nephew and I am pretty sure they like her more than me, which is fair. If you see Jane at the wedding, ask her about Phil, Taylor Swift, or the time she almost scared Joey to death in a fox costume."

If you see Payton at the wedding, first congratulate her on her new baby, then ask her about the Facebook incident (she'll know)."
