Nerja is a small town situated right on the Mediterranean coastline, in the south of Spain, in the Andalucia region. The town is built on a cliff above numerous sandy coves and lies at the foot of the impressive Sierra de Almijara mountain range. Protected by the mountains, the temperate climate makes Nerja an ideal place to visit at any time of the year. The town centre is located around the Balcón de Europa - this is a beautiful promenade and lookout point.
The main beach is Burriana beach (to the right of the map, see below) but there are many small private coves to the east and west of the Balcón de Europa. You can easily walk around town as most of it is flat. It would take approximately half an hour to walk from one side of Nerja (Burriana beach) to the other side (El Playazo beach). As most of the town is located on the cliffs over the sea, the beach area around the town centre and Burriana beach is a downhill walk.
The main shopping streets are Pintada and Almirante Ferrándiz (also known as post office street) and Diputación, El Barrio and Castilla Perez. The market is on every Tuesday from 8.30am to 2pm.
There are lots of restaurants and bars in the area – Some recommended restaurants are Pinocchio and La Bottega (Italian), Mums (Indian). For something more fancy and bit more expensive there are Restaurant 34 (fine dining) on Calle Carabeo and Oliva (fine dining) calle Pintada, Bakus (fine dining) on calle Carabeo and for the best fish, paella and barbecued meats, go to Burriana Beach where there are lots of restaurants known as Chiringuitos or Merenderos along the seafront. Nerja has a fantastic Tapas tradition with bars like El Pulguilla on calle Almirante Ferrandiz, La Taverna also on calle Almirante Ferrandiz and on calle Carabeo, Paco Mari and Round Bar on calle de la Gloria. More Tapas bars can be found in the new town area such as Los Sevillanos.
There is no shortage of bars in Nerja but to name just a few Cochran´s Terrace is a popular spot with a large outdoor terrace overlooking the sea. Watch the world go by on the Plaza Cavana or relax with a cocktail in the Buddha Bar rooftop terrace (Between Calle Pintada and Calle Christo). There is a traditional flamenco bar called El Molino (on the San Jose street between Pintada and Almirante Ferrándiz).
The main nightclub area is known as Plaza Tutti Frutti (this has 8 bars and nightclubs that open from 10pm till 6am!)
There is plenty to keep you busy in Nerja, if you fancy chilling on the beach, going to see the caves, kayaking, golfing, renting a boat or going on a boat trip, jeep safari, diving etc.
