The Sacred Heart

Illustrated by Leanne Bowen, Catholic artist.

June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Catholic Church because of the timing of the feast day, traditionally celebrated on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, which usually falls in June. This devotion reflects Christ’s infinite love & mercy, symbolized by His heart, & is rooted in Scripture & Church tradition.

The devotion was popularized in the 17th century following private revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun. Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart to her as a sign of His deep love for humanity & His desire for souls to love Him in return. The Church later formalized the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1856, & the month of June became a natural time to honor this devotion, as the feast consistently occurs during this month.

The focus on the Sacred Heart during June encourages Catholics to reflect on Jesus’s boundless love & mercy, respond with gratitude & reparation, & grow closer to His divine heart.

What better image to mirror our marriage after?! Please ask Jesus to give us hearts like His, that we might lavish one another in love, mercy, gratitude, forgiveness, & grace. Please also pray that we would draw closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, especially through our union!

The Blessed Virgin Mary

Digitally drawn by Jordan on 12/18/2021

The memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary being celebrated on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, corresponds to the tradition in the Catholic Church of honoring Mary on Saturdays, particularly after significant liturgical feasts. This date follows the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which occurs on Friday, June 13th, 2025.

The Church has long associated Saturdays with devotion to Mary, recognizing her unique role in salvation history & her unwavering faith during Jesus’s passion & death. This practice dates back to early Christian times & was later formalized in the Roman liturgical calendar. By observing this memorial, the faithful honor Mary as the Mother of the Church & seek her intercession & guidance.
