It's Saturday morning and I have already told Jordyn that I made a dinner reservation for the two of us at 5pm. I didn't tell her where, though. The next plan is also to meet up later with my family to take pictures of us with the dogs and then go to a pumpkin patch. However, that part of the plan is all just a ruse.
First thing, I find out where I can print pictures of Jordyn and me that I gathered together on my phone the night before. I get to Walmart and print up two big pictures of engagement photos that we had already taken in September. I also printed up a bunch of smaller photos to make a timeline of our relationship. The night before, I had gone to buy some candles and picture frames with my mom. While I was printing pictures on Saturday morning my mom was getting sunflowers and white and yellow roses. I brought home the pictures and then drove down to the Provo City Center Temple to scope out some possible spots to set up the proposal. I found a couple spots that I liked and took pictures of them to send to my mom. I also, drew on a satellite image of the temple grounds marking option A and option B. Option A seemed like the perfect private spot west of the temple with a gorgeous view of the temple and mountains. My plan was for my mom and the others to park in the Post Office parking lot to the west while I would take Jordyn to the south parking lot. That way she would not see my mom's bright blue car, which might look suspicious. I sent all of this in a group chat with my mom, Jordyn's mom, Megan, and Brady. After exploring the temple grounds I returned home to help my mom get things ready and packed away in the car.
Now Jordyn says she is back in American Fork from her trip to a bridal expo in Salt Lake City. We decided she could meet me and carpool in my car to the restaurant. I drove us to The Riverwoods and she doesn't know where we are eating until we walk up to La Jolla Grove. It's a nice restaurants that looks like you are eating under a bunch of lemon trees. By this time, my phone has been dinging a lot due to the proposal group chat that I had created. Between that and checking my phone I knew I must look pretty suspicious, so I silenced my phone.
I excused myself to the restroom to catch up on everything coming through the group chat and I updated them on our status at La Jolla Grove.
I returned to the table and enjoyed a nice meal with Jordyn. Jordyn's salmon was the best salmon we have ever tasted. However, neither of us were very hungry so we didn't eat for very long. Plus, there was no one else in the restaurant, so everything was going much faster than I expected.
So I had to start stalling a bit. During this time, friends and family are setting up the proposal sight at the temple. There was my parents, Jordyn's parents, Jordyn's friend Megan, and my buddy Brady with his wife Kenna. They were a huge help putting together such a beautiful setup for the proposal.
I figure they need more time to get things set up so I take my sweet time driving slowly to the temple even making a wrong turn or two. When we were leaving La Jolla Grove Jordyn was commenting about getting to the canyon quickly before the sun goes down, since my fake plan was to take family pictures in the canyon and go to a pumpkin patch. Apparently, she noticed that I didn't seem at all concerned about daylight since I was going so slow. I was wanting the sun to go down so that candles they set up would look nice and romantic in the low light.
Anyway, the drive to the temple is when I am the most nervous. Nervous about the proposal going right and also timing my arrival right and making sure the candles were lit before we arrived. It was difficult to stay in communication with the group message without Jordyn noticing. At one moment I felt like passing out because I knew at some point I'd be turning to drive towards the temple instead of the canyon. I knew she would know that something is up, but I had not yet come up with an excuse yet for the sudden change of destination. I made a quick turn off of University Avenue and into the south parking lot of the Provo City Temple. I was thinking at this time that Jordyn must know what's coming.
My last second made up story was that my mom wanted to get a couple of pictures of us at the temple before going to the canyon. I doubt she bought it at all, but she seemed to play a long. We stepped onto temple grounds just inside the gate. Then I got down on one knee AAAAAND... I tied my shoe. It really was untied. I found it kinda funny while I was down on one knee. I grabbed Jordyn's hand and proceeded towards the west side of the temple. I couldn't see anything set up. We went around some tall bushes and there it was. The pictures, the flowers, and the candles were all set up. I could hear Jordyn's breathing turn to sniffling. I glanced at Jordyn. She was already crying. We walked up to the heart of pictures and I tell her, "You know what this, right?"
While Jordyn is facing the proposal scene starting to bawl I began to point out the heart timeline of pictures from our dating story. Jordyn said that she couldn't even see any of the pictures because she was blinded by her tears.
A couple of minutes have past on the scene and I'm starting to look for the ring. "The ring... WHERE IS THE RING?" I thought. Did they really forget to leave the ring there? I look all around and can't find it. I'm feeling more anxious at this point. While Jordyn is standing there crying while looking at all of the photos I text the group chat, "Where is the ring?" Almost immediately I get a text from my mom saying that it is behind the black and white picture. And sure enough, I found it right there!
I turned to Jordyn and tell her that I need to ask her a question. We moved to the center of the heart of pictures and I get down on one knee. I confessed my love to her and asked her to marry me. She said, "ABSOLUTELY, YES!" I stood up, placed the ring on her finger and then the kiss and hugging stuff followed.
I knew that everyone else is hiding somewhere nearby. they wanted to give us some privacy. I shouted out to them, "Alright everyone, you can come out now!" And so they did. We hugged and took pictures... and more pictures... and more picture until is was so dark and so cold. And that's the story of how I proposed to her!
