We met through the hockey community in Darwin in 2013 (yes it's taken Jamie this long to get this far and yes it's another hockey couple). Our first date: a cliché straight out of the Darwin version of Grease at the Cool Spot in Fannie Bay for a milkshake and a burger. Here's a run down of our lives over the past 11 years. Please note that there was no collusion in our answers.
What are 3 things you remember about first getting to know each other:
Josie:
1. Running multiple 2.2km laps around Marrara after training as an excuse to spend time together, Jamie trying to talk to me, me trying to breath, talk and run at the same time, while pretending I was super fit and loved running (I really, really hate running!)
2. Going to the beach for coffee and to hang out (one of our very early dates) and us both going to hockey training the next day bright red and very sunburnt - Kate Paul, Kirralee Pavy and Adam Luck all commented on our mutual sunburn when we were busted "not dating".
3. Hanging out for the first time in "town" (Wisdoms) after winning our social 6 aside hockey comp. Staying up all night talking (literally all night) and then having 6am training the next morning. Both very sick and hungover. Jamie was going to drive me out to Palmerston after training to go to work at the Optical Superstore. I was so sick that we had to stop multiple times for me to throw up. I called in sick on the way there (the only time I have ever called in for being hungover), Jamie skipped Uni, and we watched Lethal Weapon all day.
Jamie:
1. I remember Josie being really into fitness. Many 2.2km after training runs were done - almost certainly by choice because she enjoyed them...
2. Having a car that doubled as a wardrobe for many trips out bush on a Friday after uni. and 45 min each way in a car between houses is a lot of time to get to know someone.
3. A trip to Wisdoms bar after winning the social hockey competition in Darwin. Some bad dancing to some great songs. Talking until the sun came up and then having to battle through morning hockey training. An impromptu day off of all responsibilities.
How about meeting the parents:
Josie: The first time I met Hully he asked me what year I was in at school (to be fair, I had only graduated around a year prior).
Jamie: The first time I met Shorty, one of the first things out of his mouth was, "do you want a beer?" The answer was yes.
What was the first place you travelled together:
Domestically - Jamie travelled to the Gold Coast to retrieve Josie from Griffith Uni, abandoning Helen, and bringing her back to Darwin. All thanks to Suzi's Frequent Flyer points and Wotif deals because we were both broke and jobless.
Internationally - Singa"poor". Again thanks to Suzi's funding. With a can do attitude, and hotel happy hour, we could afford dinner and drinks each night. The idea of paying $15 for a cocktail was outrageous, so we splurged and had one to share the entire trip.... holidays look a little different now.
How many countries have you been to together and where were they:
12 countries:
Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, America, Italy, Switzerland, France, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic.
What was your favourite trip:
Josie: Italy both the fist time for Suzi's 50th, the second time for the ring.
Jamie: The US for Dads 50th, with an amazing group of family and friends in a little red ski haus.
When did you first move in together:
We were only "casually dating" to begin with because Josie was moving to the Gold Coast. After her 3 month stint there, we essentially lived together, from then onwards.
Where have you both lived together:
Our cars, between Josie's childhood home in Berry Springs and Jamie's in Northlakes, then in a family rental with Josie's whole family - Shorty, Teagan, Bradley, Jack and Dekoda (our fur human). We had a very brief solo stint in our first home in Mararra, before Helen moved in, closely followed by Ewan, then both of them after we set them up. This was followed closely by Jack to commence his "Live-in Life Coaching Experience ™". We then had another short COVID solo stint in a rental when we first moved to Hobart. Jamie then abandoned Josie, having just made her move across the country, when he moved to Adelaide for a year (thank you Brodie for temporarily adopting and looking after him). Shorty commenced his "Live-in Life Coaching Experience ™" just prior to Jamie's return and helped us move into our own slice of Tassie in Glenorchy. Shortly followed by Teagan and Nathan relocating for their "Live-in Life Coaching Experience ™". We have now migrated North for our all-inclusive (lunch included) "Northlakes assisted living experience ™".
What are some of the major milestones you have reached together:
Both graduating - Jamie in Medicine, Josie in Law.
Josie's admission as a Lawyer to the NT Supreme Court. Jamie passing his Paediatric exams.
Many new and exciting job opportunities including our first professional jobs.
Both playing for Stingers / Pearls for the NT in AHL.
Getting a doggo.
Going on our first multi-day hike with 25kg bags (we had all the gear and no idea).
Climbing many mountains, including completing the Tour du Mont Blanc.
Being all but certified Live-In Life Coaches.
Avoided having a child.
Owning two houses.
Getting engaged.
What are three things you admire about each other:
Josie:
1. His patient and calm nature,
2. His humour, inner child and adventurous apprach to life.
3. His passion and drive to solve problems, continue to grow and learn, and continously expand our lives.
Jamie:
1. Her determination to do and be better every day.
2. Her passion for making the world a better place especially for those less fortunate than we are.
3. Her willingness to commit to all of life's challenges with me, even when they push our "Brave/Stupid meter ™" to it's limit.
