Santa Barbara is a beautiful coastal community with stunning beaches, historical landmarks, multiple options for outdoor activities, shopping, wine tasting, breweries and dining options all packed into an area which is easy to navigate and enjoy. If you start your day at the foot of Stearns Wharf (State St. & Cabrillo Blvd.), most of the main sites and charm of the city are within walking distance. Below is a list of suggestions. Things to do & see in Santa Barbara:
Stearns Wharf - A historic pier which has a small aquarium, shops, restaurants, lots of fishermen and an amazing view of both the town and the Pacific Ocean, is found at the foot of State Street. It's a perfect place for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon drinks.
Santa Barbara Harbor - Restaurants and a nice breakwater to walk on.
The Funk Zone – This area, which spans between the ocean and Highway 101, has wine tasting rooms, breweries, galleries and shops that cater to Santa Barbara’s contemporary side.
Whale Watching - Take a tour for ocean views and wildlife spotting. Humpback whale migration is happening right off the coast of Santa Barbara in October and is fascinating to see! In addition, blue whales, orcas, fin, and minke whales are also in the area. Catch the Condor Express right in the Santa Barbara Harbor.
The Santa Barbara Zoo - One of four zoos in the world where you can see the California Condor! A small zoo with amazing ocean views and gardens to stroll through. This is where Julia did many summers of Zoo Camp!
Hiking - There are lots of great hiking options in Santa Barbara and Montecito. Julia's favorite is Inspiration Point! It's a ~45 minute hike with beautiful views of the city and ocean.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse - Climb the tower for panoramic city views from the iconic Spanish-Moorish building. It’s about 1.5 miles from Stearns Wharf.
El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park - Step back in time at this historic Spanish fort. It's just a few minutes walk from the County Courthouse.
Santa Barbara Museum of Art - Discover global art collections.
Old Mission Santa Barbara - Known as the "Queen of the Missions," explore its beautiful architecture, gardens and history.
Beaches - East Beach is a favorite, located on Cabrillo Blvd. in front of the Cabrillo Pavilion and the Mar Monte and Hilton Hotels. There is a restaurant called Reunion located on the first floor of the Cabrillo Pavilion which is right on the beach. This is a great place for lunch, dinner and drinks.
Paddle Board/Kayak/Surfboard Rentals - Located on the beach between Stearns Wharf & the Harbor.
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden - Walking trails highlighting native California plants.
Cabrillo Bike Path - Enjoy coastal biking along the waterfront. Rentals are available at
multiple locations near Stearns Wharf and the Funk Zone.
State Street - The heart of downtown, filled with shops, restaurants and theaters.
Cabrillo Arts & Craft Show - This is an eclectic art show held along Cabrillo Blvd., just south of Stearns Wharf, every Sunday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
Golf – Santa Barbara Municipal Golf Course and Sandpiper Golf Course are both
excellent courses.
