Wawel Cathedral

Wawel Cathedral’s chapels are fascinating in their own right, the most famous of which is Sigismund Chapel (Kaplica Zygmuntowska). Every aspect of Wawel Cathedral is immersed in history, from the prehistoric animal bones hanging on the door in the entrance to the shrine to Poland’s former bishop and current patron saint, St Stanislaus, the Konfesja Św Stanisława. Even the bell of Wawel Cathedral tells a story. Visitors can view the bell by climbing the seventy steps to where it resides.

The cathedral is something of a maze inside – the audio guide is extremely good (and helpful!) when it comes to navigating inside. You’ll have to pay to climb the 70 steps up to the Sigismund Bell, Poland’s largest historic bell which needs 8 men to ring it. The views across the city are fabulous. The Royal Crypts and Wawel Cathedral Museum opposite are also included in the fee.

Kraków’s Rynek Główny (Central Square) is the nerve centre of the city’s medieval Old Town. Forever a hive of activity, this 40,000 square-foot medley of café’s, museums, clubs, pubs, music bars, souvenir shops, historical landmarks, hotels, and hostels, is punctuated with some of the most magnificent middle-age architecture the city has to offer.

Here you can visit the famous Sukiennice (Cloth Hall, an indoor market with many different stalls where you can buy souvenirs and other goodies.

You can also find the Rynek Underground Museum sits directly beneath the main square. Based around recently excavated foundations, dating back to the city’s beginnings, this is an imaginative and engaging way to discover Kraków’s history.

Zakopane is known as the gateway town to Tatra National Park and can be reached from Kraków in roughly two hours, the ideal distance for a day trip. You can organize this yourself if you have your own transport. Most hotels offer transportation and minibuses that provide day trips to Zakopane or you can book through third-party sites such as: https://www.getyourguide.com/zakopane-l1554/

If you're feeling brave there are many hiking trails you can complete through the mountains or take rides to the summits using cable cars to hike your way down!

An essential part of any trip to the town is to ascend to the 1,123m peak of neighboring Mt. Gubałówka. From here, you get stunning views over the town and beyond to the snowy peaks Tatra mountains. You can hike to the summit if you’re feeling strong. Most, however, choose to take the 5-minute funicular railway journey directly up the side of the mountain. There are many shops to do some shopping, a gravity slide and rope adventure park for kids (an adults) and so much yummy food!!
