Although Kaitlyn and Cody grew up only 1 mile apart in Vesper, Wisconsin, Kaitlyn and Cody met in elementary school when Kaitlyn started attending Kindergarten and Cody was in 1st Grade. Their story began as elementary school crushes consisting of flowers and valentines notes for Valentine's Day and candy canes for Christmas.

Kaitlyn and Cody started dating the beginning of high school where they attended numerous dances including prom, homecoming, and winter formal. Cody regularly attended Kaitlyn's soccer games and Kaitlyn regularly supported Cody's hockey games.

Cody and Kaitlyn spent their undergraduate degrees visiting each other's college campuses. Cody attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse majoring in finance and Kaitlyn attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls majoring in animal science. After graduating, Cody began a plumbing apprenticeship in Wisconsin as Kaitlyn headed to Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. They enjoy golfing together, traveling, and attending local breweries and wineries.

In 2021, they welcomed Olive the French Bulldog into their lives. Although she is very attached to her mom Kaitlyn, Cody is sometimes viewed as an acceptable companion when Kaitlyn is busy studying for school.

On December 16th, 2023, Cody proposed to Kaitlyn during a weekend trip staying in a tiny home in rural Wisconsin.
