This year Nebraska will have a new tourism slogan much to Kara's dismay. Long gone will be the thought of "Nebraska: It's Not for Everyone!" That being said, Kara as a recent transplant, has learned that Nebraska is full of hidden treasures you really have to look around to find. Listed below will be things to do that are for the most part very hidden gems. Have fun exploring a state that should be for everyone!
Lincoln
Listed below are a few fan favorites and sites that have special meaning to the couple. When perusing, be sure to read the descriptions as there are often several stores mentioned nearby or the site holds special meaning for the couple.
This zoo is a local gem with fun for all ages. This little zoo focuses on allowing kids to interact with the animals as much as possible. They even let you feed the giraffes! A big bonus is also the location; right across the street for the ceremony site.!
This park is quite sprawling with a lot of trails. Those in the know will drive to the back to see a herd of buffalo enjoying the prairie. It has a cute one room school house named after Cunningham. Bonus points if you remembered Kara's mom is a Cunningham!
This international museum is top notch, and Kara loves to see their collections which are always on rotation.
You cannot come to Lincoln without driving around campus! The campus proper bleeds into downtown Lincoln and the Pinnacle Arena as well which is considered in the Haymarket. There is a ton of different shops and activities to do around here from antiquing to eating. The university houses the Tractor Lab, the Johnny Carson center, art museum, Memorial Stadium, and the natural history museum. The Haymarket proper is filled with eateries like Lazlo's, arcade bars, little shops, and the Saturday morning city market---which is a must!
Our little love birds like to hang out here for some appetizers or a quick bite to eat while overlooking a beautifully landscaped little pond. For those who are truly ambitious and love seafood, Hiro 88 is attached, and they offer an amazing array of sushi. Walking around the little shopping complex you will find some cafes as well as great ice cream at the 402 Creamery!
Lazlo's happens to be where this all started! This was the first date restaurant for Kara and James. While the original date Lazlo's did burn down, this one at the Haymarket is going strong and has something to offer all diners.
James has a big sweet tooth, and licorice is his favorite candy! This company is definitely a wonderful treat! They carry licorice from all over the world, and their staff are superb at helping you pick ones to try and take home! This location also serves as the backdrop for a local college and has a great spice shop as well as cafes nearby.
This is the place to try out for all sorts of flights and it is located in a historic building. Kara is always finding some tasty cider, seltzers, or beers to try. Everyone who visits loves to check this place out! Next door is quite the tasty doughnut shop too!
This sweet little museum is the perfect place to let your kiddos run wild!
Do you feel the need for speed?? James loves his NASCAR and this little gem in Lincoln is a great place to check out to see all sorts of racing memorabilia not limited to NASCAR too!
Nebraska is full of small-time distributors and distilleries. James Arthur definitely makes some of the best local wines and has a beautiful little vineyard to check out.
Beatrice
Beatrice will be the town site of the reception venue. It is full of quaint small time charm and does have several little shops to check out. Beatrice is about 15 minutes away from where James grew up.
Kara loves this quilt shop which has fabulous sections of color specific fabrics. She will never leave empty handed, and if you are a quilter, neither will you!
During her knee recovery, Kara took her folks to visit this nearby state park. An important stop on the Pony Express trail, it is also where Wild Bill Hickok got his start! Come to find out, it was not a very positive impression for the Mr. Hickok.
Kara's folks enjoyed this national park, and you will too if you have any interest in the prairie life. This is near the site of the first land grab granted for settling the west, and this government act certainly had an influence for the Harvey family line.
Omaha
Omaha certainly gets the name grab for the state of Nebraska, and it is well deserved. Listed below are some key things to do as well as some places to visit on the drive into Lincoln from Omaha that hold our couples' hearts.
What can you say... The Omaha Zoo is just world class. It is one of the best zoos around; plan to stay there all day because you will want to! Kara used to come here as a little girl and it's still her favorite zoo.
This botanical garden is just beautiful! Kara takes out of town guests here during the holidays for the beautiful displays! Certainly, something the Harvey family gardeners would have loved!
Kara loves to take guests here to drive thru this safari park which is an outreach of the Omaha zoo. It is a great day trip, and for the hunters and animal lovers alike it's a great stop.
No trip to Omaha is not complete without stopping at Mangelsens! It is a hobby lobby like store, owned by an independent family. You will always find something nifty here, and Kara's friends all love to say hi to the store mascot-a older Labrador gentleman who slowly meanders the store.
This fun candy shop focuses on nostalgia; think to look for candies from the 1950's! It's also located in a great area to walk around, shop, and catch a meal. Kara loves the record album shop across the street.
James and Kara love to stop at this antique store. From the outside, it doesn't look spectacular; however, on the inside, it is full of all sorts of antiques. James loves to collect Daguerreotypes while Kara has begun hunting for certain Pyrex types and glassware.
Kara's dad loves this candy shop, and Kara is a big fan too. You can find just about any candy you may want, as well as locally made state famous salad dressings and the Wahoo wiener!
This state park is near many things on the list, and offers a variety of activities for families to get out and stretch the legs!
Ashland is just the cutest little town to walk thru and has quite a few cute shops including a wonderful independent bookstore. Kara loves to take her gal pals here for girls' day out; and the wonderful Glacial Till is an amazing cap off. If you love ciders and chef curated dishes, then you will not go wrong here!
So this stop is on the Nebraska tourism page, and it does not disappoint! If you are looking for amazing fried chicken with a live show this is the place to be. And when we say live...we mean the backyard of the restaurant has a racoon paradise. It is truly a pure Nebraskan experience....
Near Nebraska City
For those families headed up from Missouri and west from Iowa, you will see several things of interest to stop and explore.
This state park is a bit off the beaten path, but does have a cave, several trails, and a unique Indian cemetery. For those looking for a bit of a hike, it's a must! Locals credit it as being one of the best state parks in Nebraska, but it certainly has less foot traffic.
This little research orchard associated with UNL is a u-pick and popular for families year round with lots of playgrounds and things to do. Kara favors it for the apple cider doughnuts and slushies which James just realized he had been missing out on all along!
Kara did not realize until moving to Nebraska how tree friendly this state was! Did you know Arbor Day was created here, and they take this holiday SERIOUSLY. This farm has a fun little treetop walkway for families and is near the Arbor Day Lodge State Historical Park. It is a beautiful place to enjoy a sunny day.
This site is right off highway two and a great scenic lookout over the Missouri. Bonus points if you notice all the BNSF lines that go by. James often drives on the Iowa side!
