Back in 2010, when smart phones, dating apps, and the internet had barely been invented, Rob and Katherine met the old fashioned way- a blind date! They were set up by mutual friends and Katherine hadn't even seen a picture of Rob before they met for their first date. But having just finished her first semester of graduate school, she thought a night out would be a good way to blow off some steam. And then, they fell in love- despite the fact he was moving to San Francisco and Katherine still had a year left in her graduate degree program in San Diego- and they spent the first year of their relationship in different cities. After graduating, Katherine got a job back in the Bay Area, moved home, and then in 2015, Katherine and Rob officially moved in together. As the years passed, they had a world of experiences. They visited six countries and eleven states, attended twelve weddings, got fired four times between the two of them, and social distanced their way through one global pandemic. As they celebrated alongside friends who were getting married and having kids, Rob and Katherine started to think, could that be us? And in 2018, they decided- maybe! They said goodbye to the wild life at the Fell Street apartment (if you've been there and lived- congratulations!) and bought a house in the suburbs. Shortly after, Rob surprised Katherine with a burrito-sized Australian Shepherd puppy they named Bodie. He immediately became the anchor in their family and the center of many adventures, joining them on hikes, patios at fine dining restaurants and beer gardens alike, train trips through the forest, and even jet ski trips in the delta. He helped them learn how to be parents and a true family. Two and a half years after they brought him home, they found themselves bringing home their newborn daughter- the beautiful, playful, intelligent and kind Miss Sophia Renne. Then in February of 2024, about 14 years after that first blind date, Rob drove Katherine (and Bodie!) up to the Berkeley Hills to watch the sunset, and proposed- complete with champagne, a sustainably sourced diamond ring, and Cheetos. That first night 12 years ago, sitting over wings, beer, and football, they never would have imagined they were sitting with their future husband and wife. And even with everything they've done together already, they know there is so much more more to discover- both beyond their front door, but also within their own home. ---- All the turns along the road- the good, bad and especially the ugly- brought us to this marriage, and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of this life. The wedding venue is located 10 minutes from the San Diego airport (SAN). (If you're flying southwest, you can hit up the bride's sister for drink coupons!) You can easily take an uber/Lyft from the airport to anywhere in San Diego.

Accommodation and Sample Hotels

There are hundreds of hotels and VRBOs/AirBNBs within a 15 minute drive of the venue! We do have a room block available at the Hyatt in Mission Bay, which is a ten minute drive from the venue. We also love the Bahia Hotel, 6 minute drive to venue or 1.5 mile walk, for its proximity to venue, on site restaurant, and lush grounds and pool. They offer cruises around the Bay on their steamboat Bahia Belle. However, and especially if you're traveling in a group, we do recommend VRBO or AirBNB over a hotel.The neighborhoods most adjacent to the venue- Mission Bay and Pacific Beach - have lots of options and are all vibrant neighborhoods where you don't need a car. Choose something along the Pacific Coast on the stretch starting at Belmont Park in the South to Tourmaline Surf Park in the North to be within two miles of the venue.North Park, La Jolla Cove, Hillcrest, and Kensington, and Ocean Beach are all cute neighborhoods with their own distinctive personalities within 20 minute drive of the venue.The address of our venue is 1010 Santa Clara Place- be sure to check the address of your accommodation to make sure it's where you want to be in relation to the venue!

Transit

While there is no public transit directly to the venue, The Point is very centrally located to the amazing San Diego neighborhoods of Mission Bay (5 minutes), Ocean Beach/Pacific Beach (10 minutes), La Jolla (15 minutes) and the Gaslamp/downtown quarter (20 minutes). A Lyft/Uber from these any of these areas should be under $20. The Friday picnic site is an 18 minute drive from the Mission Bay Area, or $20 Uber. If you choose to rent a car, it is very easy to do so adjacent to the San Diego airport. Once you leave the baggage claim area, there is a free shuttle to all rental company lots, around 10 min away. We do recommend booking your rental car in advance. (We tried it this past summer and with an advance reservation we were off the plane and into a car in around 45 minutes.)

Travel and Accommodations

We hope you will have some time to extend your stay beyond the wedding festivities and enjoy San Diego. Rob and I fell in love in this city- and we think you will fall in love with the city too!

Obviously one of the number one things to do in San Diego is visit the beach! Mission Beach is the closest beach to the venue. It has nearly two miles of oceanfront boardwalk as well as expansive beaches perfect for that pre- or post- wedding R &amp; R. Start in the sand at Mission Beach Park, enjoy walking along the Boardwalk, and end at Belmont Park (see below) for some classic boardwalk beach town fun.

Belmont Park is a classic beachside Boardwalk. It has shops, restaurants, and amusement park style rides. From a carousel for the little ones to the Giant Dipper roller coaster, everyone will have a good time. There is also Tiki Town mini golf, laser tag, and an escape room. There is great beach access with a paved promenade along the white sandy expanse of Mission Beach. Admission is free, with ride tickets available for purchase. Belmont Park

One of my favorite places to spend an afternoon in San Diego! Balboa Park is an expanse of Spanish colonial architecture, urban gardens, and more than 16 museums. The grounds are free to walk through. Museums include Fleet Science Center, San Diego Natural History Museum, Japanese Garden, and San Diego Museum of Art- check individual websites for prices. The zoo is also located on the north side. The park is also home to the Moreton Bay Fig Tree- planted in 1915, it is now more than 80 feet high. Highly kid friendly, with many museums catering to littles. Note that this was the site of our engagement photo shoot, so as youre checking out how good looking we are don't forget to look at the background. Entrance to the park and walking throughout is free, with paid admission for museums. 9 miles from venue.

Balboa Park

The San Diego Zoo is one of the world's premier zoos and research facilities. It is situated in Balboa Park (see above) which is a wonderful place to spend the day! The zoo is quite large, you can expect to walk a lot and see a lot, including pandas! Distance from: The Point wedding venue: 10 miles

One of the many companies offering a 1.5 sea cave kayak tour at beautiful La Jolla Cove. Check out caves, seals, and tiger sharks. (Minimum age 6.) They also offer kayak rentals if you want to explore on your own. Distance from: The Point wedding venue: 6 miles

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks

A great little play area in Mission Bay. Think sand, palm trees, and gentle calm waters to wade in. The best part is its only 1.5 miles from the Point Venue, and also walkable to many Pacific Beach eateries and attractions.

Rebecca Craft

Across Katherine and Becky's 30-year friendship, they've made some big steps! In the early days, they attended church camp, crashed Katherine's Tercel, and briefly shared a career as payday loan sharks at Check Into Cash. The adventures continued in their 20s with a party bus in Austin, Third Eye Blind concerts across multiple states, and more than a few sketchy nights in their hometown of Benicia.These days, they've (supposedly) put their wild streaks behind them and live just 10 minutes apart with their fiancés and daughters. Their adventures may be less "run around Alcatraz in the snow" and more "run around a playground chasing our kids"—but they wouldn't have it any other way. ---Becky,You are my sister from another mister, my ride or die, and my partner in every bad—and awesome—decision. You only live once (YOLO, bestie!), and I'm so glad I get to spend my life with you in it. I love you forever! Now… when’s our next vacay?!Katherine

Eden Elston

Eden was a just a three year old when Katherine and Rob met and has now made it all the way to sixteen. Katherine has loved being her aunt all these years. There were early times of trips to Disneyland and visits back home to Ohio… These days you can find them getting their nails done, testing out home hair-dye kits, doing workout videos perhaps just one level too hard, gossiping just a little bit about boys, and practicing driving Katherine's car. (Katherine needs as much practice as Eden). --- I am so proud of the kind, generous and beautiful person you have grown into! You are a wonderful big cousin role model for Sophia. Ben Plung

Ben and Rob met as young chefs in South Florida at the Boca Raton Resort and Club over 20 years ago. Sharing a passion of cooking, hip hop music, and Miami sports, they became fast friends. When they were 22 they moved to San Francisco, having a great time exploring the Bay Area and eating at amazing restaurants (even though they were broke). A few years later Rob moved to San Diego, luckily met Katherine and came back to San Francisco. Around that time Ben had his firstborn, Donovan, and that’s when Rob became “Uncle Robbie”. It took a while, but the Plungs couldn’t have been more thrilled for Robbie and Katherine to start a family of their own. Even though their own journey has taken the Plungs to Pittsburgh PA, Ben and Robbie are close as ever- only now the talks are more about parenthood and less about the Miami Dolphins.

Adrian Griffith

When Rob's baby sister Cait married Adrian in 2021, Rob (who has three sisters) finally got a brother! With their shared love of golf, plaid button ups, and being amazing dads, sometimes people wonder if they aren't really related after all. We are honored to have Uncle Adrian in Sophia's life and standing at the altar supporting Rob on our wedding day.
