A Maharashtrian Banjara wedding is a vibrant celebration steeped in tradition and cultural richness. The ceremony is a beautiful blend of rituals and customs that highlight the unique heritage of the Banjara community. Arrival of the Groom (Baraat): The groom arrives at the wedding venue in a grand procession, known as the Baraat, often accompanied by traditional Banjara music and dance. He is welcomed by the bride's family with a ritual known as Swagat. Antarpat Ceremony: The bride and groom stand on either side of a cloth (antarpat) held by family members. This cloth symbolizes the separation of their individual lives. As the priests chant mantras, the cloth is lowered, and the couple exchanges garlands (Jaimala), signifying their acceptance of each other. Kanyadaan and Saptapadi: In the Kanyadaan ritual, the bride’s father entrusts his daughter to the groom, signifying the giving away of the bride. This is followed by the Saptapadi, where the couple takes seven sacred vows while circling the holy fire, each step representing a promise to support and cherish one another throughout their life. Sindoor and Mangalsutra: The groom applies sindoor (vermilion) to the bride's forehead and ties the mangalsutra (a sacred necklace) around her neck, signifying their marital bond.
