Different areas to stay in

Sea Point is a lively and eclectic suburb on a narrow stretch of land along the ocean, in the shadow of the Signal Hill mountain. The suburb contains many modern bars and cafés. Stroll along the picturesque beachfront promenade for a sense of the busy atmosphere near the water.

The paved walkway of this coastal esplanade is the heart of the neighbourhood. Join the joggers and walkers and enjoy views of the ocean. Go cycling or skateboarding along the boulevard from Bantry Bay to Mouille Point.

Work on your tan at one of the beaches and clamber over the basaltic rocky parts with the kids. Among the popular sandy hangouts are Rocklands Beach and Sea Point Beach. Stay for the sunset, when red hues dominate the dramatic Cape Town skyline.

Relax in the chlorinated seawater swimming pools and dive pools of Sea Point Pavilion.

The area has several natural tidal pools that make swimming safe and clean. Note that the water is a little cooler here than on the False Bay side of the city. Bring the kids to one of the playgrounds that decorate the coast.

Try the mussels found on the beaches toward the northern end of this district.

Stay in one of the high-rise apartment towers and modern complexes that characterise this area. Neighbourhood pubs and bars generate a lively nightlife ambiance.

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, also known as the V&A Waterfront, is where locals and tourists alike come to enjoy Cape Town at its finest, and you can easily spend a day or more taking in its many attractions.

Sit back with a cold drink at a waterside restaurant, enjoy the cool breeze coming in from the ocean and let your eyes drift towards the unmistakable shape of Table Mountain in the distance.

Take a stroll along the waterfront and stop in at one of the many unique craft stores, or spend an afternoon trying on some designer clothing.

The waterfront development was the project of Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred, and began in 1860. Situated between two of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks, Robben Island and Table Mountain, it has evolved into the city’s most attractive and vibrant retail destination. It’s almost inevitable your visit to Cape Town will bring you to the V&A Waterfront at least once, as many of the city’s major tourist attractions are based in this area.

The V&A Waterfront is open daily, with some stores closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Camps Bay is Cape Town's party beach: a beautiful, long stretch of white sand bordered by a promenade full of restaurants, clubs, and hotels for when you need a break from the sun. It's fun and lively and can feel a bit crowded—but the setting is absolutely gorgeous, with the Twelve Apostles mountain range making for a craggy backdrop.

A lot of the larger air bnbs are located in this area.

Cape Town Bowl is the city centre & the pulse of the Mother City, providing the lifeblood of the surrounding areas. It is a melting pot of diversity and culture, a smorgasbord of historical influences and a place like no other on earth. If you really want to get underneath the skin of Cape Town, you need to start in the city.

From coffee shops and markets, to trendy lunch-spots and sophisticated nightclubs, the city is where it all happens. Bree Street is a lively hub of restaurants and bars, while Long Street continues to be a popular strip, combining clubs, bars and quirky shops selling everything from books to antiques.

The CBD is where it all happens. A combination of work and play, it is where everything comes together. During the day it is a hub of activity, but it is at night, when the curtain is drawn back, that the true soul of the Mother City is revealed. It is only once the sun sets, that the city truly comes alive.

Hotel Recommendations - Cape Town

I have pulled together a Booking.com link with hotel recommendations. We have personally stayed at the Home Stay Suites in Seapoint and can recommend it but added others that have great reviews and are in good locations across a variety of budgets. Make sure you make a Booking.com account and log on as you will often get 10% off price quoted.

As mentioned some hotels can be quite expensive and we would recommend you also check air bnb and see if sharing with other couples / families would make it more cost effective.

For date estimates Nov 25 won’t be out yet but use Nov 24 as a base

Air BnBs - Cape Town

I’ve compiled a list of air bnb’s around the recommended areas and a few in Hout Bay which is 20 mins outside of Cape Town further up the coast. Have a look at what area you think would be most suitable for the vibe you are after

Add your dates and how many people / rooms you require by clicking into the individual option. It may still be a bit early for full availability for Nov 2025 to be showing yet. Make sure you check the reviews - ideally you would want 20+ reviews left and for Cape Town they have something called load-shedding, where for a period of scheduled time the electricity cuts off. Check and see if the property has a generator to keep your power running in this instance.

Flights

There are no direct flights from Scotland. You will need to fly from Glasgow or Edinburgh and change. If booking flights make sure you are leaving a minimum of 3 hours between when your Scottish flight lands and your Cape Town flight takes off.

The main flight operators are below -

British Airways : Stopover in Heathrow then onto Cape Town

KLM : Stopover in Amsterdam then onto Cape Town

Virgin Airways : Stopover in Heathrow then onto Cape Town

Emirates: Stopover in Abu Dhabi then onto Cape Town

if you add a car hire onto the British Airways option (even if it’s just for a few days) it allows you to book your flights with a £150 deposit only and you pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.

Package Holidays

If you prefer to book a hotel and flight as a package then look at Virgin Holidays, British Airways Holidays, Trailfinders or your local travel agent - these will likely be more expensive than booking individually.

If you need any help at all then please reach out to either of us (but really Katie…) 😂
