We <3 Phoenixville!
Phoenixville is an old steel town which has recently seen a rebirth and with it, the opening of a number of notable breweries and the rejuvenation of local landmarks like the Colonial Theatre, where the original "The Blob" movie was filmed. Come for a coffee and the Saturday morning farmers' market, and stay for a beer and a walk.
Local market founded and managed by Katy's mother, Liz Andersen, where you can find local organic vegetables (including those grown at Charlestown Farm!), food trucks (try the crab-cantaloupe sandwich from Sunflower Truck Stop), locally-baked bread and pastries (including out-of-this-world sourdough cinnamon rolls from Sweetwater Bakery), award-winning local cheese made by Sue Miller at Birchrun Hills Creamery (tell her we say hi!), and handmade chocolates from John & Kira's (their chocolate honey caramel bees are as cute as they are delicious). There's always live music, too.
Open 9 am til 1 pm.
You will find the bride and groom here the morning of the wedding. It's a great running loop along Pickering Creek, and a daily ritual for us when we are home in Pennsylvania. Best to park on Charlestown Road, at the entrance to Broadwater Farm. The path begins to the right of the driveway over the crest of the hill, and is well-marked.
Siberian-native and force of nature Olga Sorzano makes micro-batches of kombucha in flavors like Asian Pear, Chamomile-Honey and Watermelon-Mint with jumbo-doses of her ridiculous humor at her studio (complete with SCOBY lanterns) in downtown Phoenixville. No town visit is complete without swinging by to pick up a few bottles or growlers of 'booch straight from one of her many taps.
The canal offers a great kayak route as well as a lovely running path which ends all the way in downtown Philadelphia.
Soltane Cafe is part of a Rudolph Steiner inspired foundation devoted to helping adults with disabilities, many of whom work in the cafe. Besides serving homemade bagels and Green Lion breads made from ancient grains, they make excellent coffee (oat milk flat whites!) brewed from Counter Culture beans. We also love their warm pain au chocolats (best outside Paris) and their ingenious shortbread cookie sandwiches filled with cream cheese icing (adorably shaped as owls and called "Hootie-Hoos") made by Le Bec Fin alum Barby Bonnett.
Steel City is a local Phoenixville insitution, with frequent live music.
Phoenixville's first distillery, with great cocktails made on site.
Stable 12 has a cute beer garden where you can sit outside and sample all of their locally brewed beers.
Conshohocken Brewing Company not only has great beer, but also shuffleboard, foosball and ping pong in their 'rec room.'!
The local movie theater, made famous after its cameo in "The Blob" (and inspiration for the annual "Blog Festival" in Phoenixville.
