It was April of 2018, and I was busy as I ever going through the closing of my house, moving in, and studying for my finance exams. In the background of all that, I had some dating apps downloaded to my phone that I would check now and then, and I would only swipe on the really promising ones ;)...
On April 12th, I matched with Derek and he sent me a sweet message. We started talking, and because I was so busy, it wasn't until about after about a month after that we went on our first date! It was a perfect night, since we both love Mexican food & margaritas, we went to Nico's Tacos & Tequila in Uptown, and then after, we went for a walk around Lake of the Isles. We both knew that night that this was going to be something special.
We spent that whole summer together, and then Derek found out he had the opportunity to take a great job at his alma mater, TCU. It was the hardest goodbye, but we knew it would be worth in the end. We took multiple trips back and forth from Fort Worth to Minneapolis, and still managed to see each other every few weeks (shout out Spirit Airlines!), and we would make the most of every minute we had together.
Long distance was hard, but we are true believers that distance makes the heart grow fonder! Finding out that over a year later Derek was going to be moving back to MN was the best news, and now we never take for granted the greatest blessing being together for good is!

I began planning the big day a few months in advance, but didn't exactly know how it was going to go down. So I told Keagan that the first weekend of August was going to be a surprise date weekend. Fast forward to Friday, July 31st and I had it all planned out. When she came home from work I had some flowers and a note waiting for her. For every thing we did during the weekend I wrote a note with different picture of us so we'd have something physical to hold on to...aside from the ring. I also made sure to take videos during everything we did so Keagan could make a little video after I asked her to marry me.
For the first stop on our date weekend, we recreated our first date with dinner at Nico's Taco and Tequila Bar and a walk around Lake of the Isles. At this point, I was pretty sure she didn't know what this whole weekend was about, but in the back of my mind I was was a little concerned that she was on to me.
The next morning, I made breakfast for her like we would do whenever we would travel to go visit each other, followed by a trip to the Hopkins Farmer's Market. That's when the nerves really started to kick in...we got back from the farmer's market and I had a note with a picture of us at Bryant Lake Regional Park. I made up the excuse that we were going to lunch after a little walk so we should probably dress up a little nicer. As we got to a quiet spot in the back of the park I asked her to marry me!
She said yes, and after the tears and photos I told her that her parents were waiting for us at their house. When we pulled up to her parent's house we were greeted by our friends and family some of which flew out from across the country as part of the surprise. Keagan had no idea any of this was happening and once again broke down into tears. It was a great day!!
