Know Before You Go

We know about half of our guests will be traveling from far away - Here are some helpful tips before you get to Ireland (and the Castle on an Island!) but please, feel free at any time to reach out to either of us on anything we can help you with or questions you have before the wedding.

On this website you will find everything you need to understand the travel, accommodations, and recommendations we have for the trip.

We are so excited for you to have made the journey!

What is the most important thing to know before the wedding?

We recommend booking flights, accommodations and any transportation early. If you are renting a car, note the earlier you book, the more cost effective it will be.

Are children invited?

In order to meet guest number restrictions. we are only able to extend our invitation to the children of immediate family on the day of our wedding.

How do I get To Waterford?

Ireland has two airports: Dublin Airport or Shannon Airport. Dublin Airport to Waterford Castle: 170km/105 miles (2-2.5 hours by car). Shannon Airport to Waterford Castle: 150km/93 miles (2-2.5 hours by car). The best way to get to Waterford is to fly into Dublin, and then either take a bus or train to Waterford. Renting a car is also an option - with any of these modes of transport. (More info regarding travel are in the Travel Tabs!)

How Do I get to Waterford Castle?

Waterford Castle is on an Island, so there is a ferry from Waterford to the Castle itself. You can either take your car, or take the ferry on foot. It is about a 5 minute journey across the river. The ferry is a 24-hour service. It runs daily to the following schedule: 7am – 12am midnight: Every 15 minutes on the quarter hour. (i.e. 7:00am, 7:15am, 7:30am, 7:45am, 8:00am etc.). See picture below!

What is the weather like summers in Ireland?

Temperature: Average High is 64-68°F (18-20°C). Average Low is 52-55°F (11-13°C). Rainfall: July is one of the drier months, but rain is still common. Expect occasional showers. Sunlight: Long daylight hours, with about 16-17 hours of daylight. Weather: Generally mild and comfortable with a mix of sunny, cloudy, and rainy days. Be sure to pack layers, including a light jacket or sweater, as well as waterproof clothing to be prepared for the changing weather.

Expected Jetlag Coming From the US to Ireland?

Eastward travel (US to Ireland) often results in more severe jet lag compared to westward travel. If you are hoping to arrive on a Tuesday, for example, you will have to leave the US on the Monday. It is recommended to give yourself a day or two to get over the jet lag. Dublin time is 6 hours ahead of US Central Standard Time.

What should I do if I want to rent a car?

1. Pre-book Online. Book your car in advance through the rental company's website to ensure availability and get better rates. Ensure you book an automatic vehicle (if you choose) as the most common vehicle type in Ireland is a manual. 2. At the Airport. Follow the signs to the rental car desks and present your booking confirmation, driver's license, passport and a credit card for the security deposit. 3. Check what insurance coverage is included. 4. You will be driving on the opposite side of the road, ensure you are comfortable with this!! See the Dublin Accommodation & Travel Tab for more info.

US to Europe Travel Visa Requirement Potentially Coming Soon

The implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, has been postponed to mid-2025. US travelers... if the travel visa is instated by July 2025 may have to inquire a travel visa in order to travel to Europe. No need to act on this yet! We will update this page when we know it will affect the guests traveling. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en

Passports

Please double-check the expiration date on your passport to ensure it is valid throughout your entire stay in Ireland. If you plan to extend your travel before or after the wedding, be sure to check the passport requirements for each country you plan on visiting, as they may differ. If you need a passport, please apply at least 6 months before your planned departure date.
