We’re getting married at Fellows Riverside Gardens, part of the historic Mill Creek MetroParks in Youngstown, Ohio. Take a stroll and enjoy the seasonal blooms, walking paths, and views of Glacier Lake.   Mill Creek Park is one of the oldest and largest metroparks in the country, with roots dating back to 1891 as the first park district in Ohio. Mill Creek Park encompasses 2,658 acres and provides hiking, biking, paddle boating, fishing, Lanterman’s Mill, golf, tennis, volleyball, picnicking, and more!     The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception will be held within Fellows Riverside Gardens, centered around the Kidston Pavilion and the Davis Center. Once you arrive and park at 123 McKinley Ave, Youngstown, OH 44509, everything is within walking distance and fully wheelchair accessible. Come early to explore the gardens or simply soak in the view.   💕A Piece of History 💕 David’s family has a special connection to Mill Creek Park, where his grandfather worked as a stone mason. It’s a fun piece of family history that adds a personal touch to our wedding venue!   🌳Our Visit July 27th, 2024🌳 Serendipitously, last July 27th we visited Mill Creek Park. David walked me over to an enchanting willow tree in the gardens that I really fell in love with. While we didn’t know right away it would be the spot for our wedding, it became a special memory, and we love that it will be part of our story. Take a look back at our visit to get a feel for a small part of the gardens and our favorite Willow Tree.

The Venue

How did you meet?

We met at one of our favorite live outdoor music venues, the Salvage Station, in Asheville, North Carolina.  Two music lovers serendipitously hanging out with our oldest friends for a night of music and dancing at the Salvage Station. We found ourselves enjoying the golden hour along the river after a midsummer thunderstorm.  Kendra stood in rain boots and a little sundress alongside her friend Katherine Erlichman of 20 years, while David strolled by with his man bun and pale yellow T-shirt with his friend Scott Mirkin of 30+ years. The stars aligned for a magnetic moment of eye contact, prompting David to do a 360 degree spin. Holding up his beer, he introduced himself with the classic line, “Cheers!”   To which Kendra replied, “Cheers! But I don’t have a beer!”   At this point, most men might have offered to procure the lady a drink, but David simply laughed and said, “I’ll see you out on the dance floor.”

Who made the first move? How?   

Sure enough, we ended up dancing next to each other as the sun set and the stars twinkled to the sound of one of our favorite bands, Toubab Krewe. As the music wound down, David walked up and said, “We’ve got to hang out sometime outside of this!” With his phone aglow, ready to take Kendra’s number. The rest is history.

When/where was your first date? 

August 13th, 2021 at our local hipster Japanese sake/sushi joint called Heiwa Shoduko.

What's the memorable meal you have eaten together?

High up in the Himalayas, we were on a three day trek when we walked into the outskirts of a tiny mountain village. The hostess of a centuries old tea house greeted us and shared that the village had no electricity, pointing to a group of seven or eight men standing around a power pole, scratching their heads. Knowing that we had been hiking all day, she proceeded to cook an incredible dinner entirely from scratch and all from her garden over a wood fire oven built into the back corner of her traditional Nepalese kitchen. She served us bottomless fresh garlic soup (known for its ability to fight altitude sickness), handmade pastries filled with a savory mysterious and deliciousness, perfectly pan fried potatoes, and herbal tea. We ate by candlelight, the only view from the window was the majestic Himalayas, illuminated by the soft glow of the moon.

The most spontaneous thing we’ve done

Kendra woke me up at 8 a.m. and told me that if we left the house within an hour, we could fly first class to Barcelona later that night. I rolled over, stared at the ceiling, and contemplated the future for about 30 seconds. I knew that if I said yes, there wouldn’t be time to think until we were on the plane. I looked at Kendra, and said, “LET’S GOOO!” Five days later, we kept the spontaneity going and flew from Barcelona to Morocco for the adventure of a lifetime.

Youngstown is accessible via three major airports:Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT): About 60 miles southeast of Youngstown, approximately a 1 hour drive. You could also test your luck with an Uber from PIT to Youngstown, but renting a car is recommended for certainty.Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE): About 75 miles northwest of Youngstown, around a 1.5-hour drive.Akron-Canton Airport (CAK): Approximately 68 miles southwest of Youngstown, about a 1.5-hour drive.Given the distances and limited public transportation options, renting a car is the easiest way to get around.

Things to do in Youngstown! 

Mill Creek Park is a 2,600+ acre metropolitan park and is a corner stone of Youngstown history. Fun fact, David’s grandpa was employed here and helped work as a stonemason for some of the walls.&nbsp;There are various hiking trails, playgrounds, waterfalls, lakes, and Lanterman's Mill! circa 1845.&nbsp;

Here’s the story: Briar Hill Pizza originated in the city’s historic Brier Hill neighborhood, once known as Little Italy, and was crafted by Italian immigrants during the Great Depression. They needed something affordable, so they got creative with ingredients they could find easily.   The pizza features a thick crust, topped with a classic tomato sauce, sweet red and green bell peppers, and a hearty sprinkle of Romano cheese.
