Not everyone desires to be right in the heart of the city...
Perhaps you prefer to wake up and unwind at one of the many local cafes or take leisurely strolls through the numerous parks these neighborhoods offer.

These charming areas just on the outskirts of Melbourne provide a plethora of beautiful accommodation options on platforms like Airbnb or VRBO. Whether you're in search of apartments or a house for you and your family, these areas are ideal for you.
With plenty of parks and close proximity to trams, even if you have a car, it's wise to double-check for available parking spaces or street parking.
Port Melbourne, situated 3 km southwest of Melbourne's central business district, is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Cities of Melbourne and Port Phillip local government areas. If you fancy morning beach walks, local cafes, and pubs while still being close to Melbourne city, you'll likely find Port Melbourne appealing!
Albert Park and South Melbourne are also excellent upmarket options for accommodations near the water. While having a vehicle is recommended, public transit and Uber are also viable transportation options from this location.
Known for its safety and upscale atmosphere, Port Melbourne is a neighborhood where you're bound to discover some stunning houses or apartments available for rent through Airbnb or VRBO.
Keep in mind that Melbourne is just a slice of what Victoria has to offer. You might opt for a few nights in the city followed by a retreat to a winery, a day spa, or a quaint country town. Here are some of my favorite areas to consider:
The Mornington Peninsula (perfect for wine tasting and beach relaxation)
The Yarra Valley (my hometown!)
Great Ocean Road (ready to catch some waves?)
The Dandenong Ranges (ideal for a scenic day trip and hiking adventure)
Daylesford (a haven for relaxation and spa indulgence)
Whether you're traveling solo, with children, or as a couple, be sure to venture beyond Melbourne City and explore the treasures that the beautiful state of Victoria has to offer.
I know what you're thinking – the long plane ride... Everyone's favorite part, right?
So, which airline should you choose to make the journey to Melbourne with the least amount of hassle? Based on my 13 years of flying between Melbourne and Canada, here are some of my favorite ways to get there (assuming you're departing from Toronto):
Air Canada offers direct flights via Vancouver into Melbourne. Please note that direct flights from Vancouver to Melbourne are seasonal, sometimes requiring connections through Sydney or Brisbane.
Qantas, Australia's favorite airline, offers routes through San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, or Dallas, Texas.
United Airlines operates flights through Los Angeles or San Francisco.
American Airlines also offers routes through Los Angeles or San Francisco.
WestJet collaborates with Virgin Australia Airlines for routes through Los Angeles or San Francisco.
If you were to ask me for my favorite airline, I'd recommend Qantas for a great Australian experience! Air New Zealand is also an excellent choice, although it involves two stops on the way to Australia.
My advice? Start saving up your points and book business class so you can arrive feeling refreshed. Alternatively, Qantas premium economy is my second favorite option, or consider choosing an exit row in Economy for extra legroom.
Happy travels, my friends! Yes, it's a long ride, but believe me, Australia is absolutely worth it!
Kerrie and Jiku, should we consider renting a car? That's a great question, and here's my advice.
If you're planning to explore beyond Melbourne city or if you're traveling with children, having a vehicle could be very beneficial.
You might find it useful to have a car if you're staying for more than a week, if you're interested in hiking, visiting beaches, or taking up my recommendations for sites like the Great Ocean Road or the Mornington Peninsula.
Upon arrival at Melbourne Airport, you have the option to rent a car, take a taxi, or use a ride-sharing service like Uber to get to your accommodation. Melbourne city itself is quite accessible by public transport or on foot if you choose not to rent a car.
