Founded more than 450 years ago, San Miguel de Allende is named for both the monk Juan de San Miguel and General Ignacio Allende, a hero in Mexico’s War of Independence. San Miguel's unique and charming historic central plaza, and the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, a 17th-century church whose pink spires are an anchoring point no matter where you are in the city.
