Back in 2019, both Matthew and I were going through a multitude of changes in our personal lives, and neither of us were on the lookout for love. That summer, I had just turned 25 and was entering into my first big girl job, doing some self-discovery, when a certain someone slid into my DMs.


I had recognized him from a slow-mo moment at Z Bar, where he was literally dancing to the beat of his own drum under the flashing lights. So I thought, Hey, hes got his own little vibe. Ill just see what hes about, but of course, let him know Im just too busy for anything serious. Fast forward to October, and he had made the decision to move to Utah with the military. Little did I know, my feelings for him were blossoming faster than I had ever anticipated.


At this point, we had not DTRed (defined the relationship).


Still, in November, I decided to take the leap and see if he would have me as company on his and Willie Nelson’s journey to good ole Utah. Luckily, he said yes, and off we went on a 23-hour trek across the country. Although we almost ran out of gas in the middle of the mountains and were dead tired, the adventure was full of moments where we really got to know each other, making our feelings even more apparent.


I was terrified of the unknown that long-distance relationships held, but I was ready to hold my breath and dive in because he made it all feel worthwhile. Thank goodness the feelings were reciprocated because 24 hours after we arrived in Ogden, Utah, I was waking up to head to the airport to jump on a plane back to Louisville when Matthew asked if I would officially be his girlfriend.


This past November marks half a decade of our love story — four years as boyfriend & girlfriend, and one as fiancés. Our journey has been adorned with countless memories of laughter, abundant learning, and a few moments of wobbliness. Yet, through it all, we have grown and changed together, always choosing each other, day after day.
