Founded in 1877, Dexter was originally called the Second Colored Baptist Church in Montgomery, Al. Dr. Martin Luther King, became the pastor and insisted that every church member become a registered voter and a member of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). He also, became the president over the MIA (Montgomery Improvement Association) and led his congregation and the black community during the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
