California in the spring offers an opportunity to view wildflowers. While it's too soon to tell if we'll have a superbloom in 2024, the Shell Creek wildflower trail offers an amazing opportunity to drive through the winding inland hills to see some iconic California wildflowers like the poppy in bloom.
This challenging hike is a favorite trail in San Luis Obispo. Hike through trees and traverse this peak to reach the top. The final stretch of this hike is a scramble up some boulders. The final scramble is not for the feint of heart, but the views from the top offer an incredible 360 degree view of the gorgeous San Luis Obispo landscape. Picture featured for this activity is from one of our many hikes up this iconic peak.
Pismo Beach is a famous long beach perfect for a long stroll by the waves. There are many lovely restaurants in Pismo as well.
Avila Beach is a local favorite for sunbathing and beach activities. The Avila pier alongside the beach has small beach shops, coffee and ice cream, and great beachside restaurants.
It will probably be too chilly for sunbathing in April, but worth a trip to see the ocean.
The MDO beach trail offers an opportunity to follow a winding cliff path along the beach. There are staircases to get down to the water and see some tidepools.
The MDO mountain trail is a strenuous hike (this hike takes approximately 2-3 hours roundtrip). The views are spectacular when you make it to the top, and you can enjoy a mid-hike snack at the picnic table.
Remember to pack a jacket, because this area of the coast is generally quite chilly.
Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio, is an immersive walk-through outdoor exhibit that is now permanent and will continue in residence. An additional two exhibits by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro: Fireflies, a whimsical work made up of close to 10,000 flickering points of light and Gone Fishing, a playful representation of the contemplative act of standing by a stream. These exhibits complement the current Field of Light and Light Towers – also by Munro.
Once an estate for a newspaper magnate, Hearst Castle is now a historic house museum and a California State Park. A 2 hour scenic drive from the San Luis Obispo Area through Cambria and Big Sur will lead you to this historic California site.
