Our story begins in 2016 when Laura was determined to have a boyfriend for her brothers’ weddings and the clock was ticking. She signed up for a year of online dating and her neighbor, Natasha, was her confidant for whenever she had a date.
As the year progressed, Laura and Natasha would often share a glass of wine in the back yard of their Quincy apartment and discuss the interesting dates. Natasha’s then boyfriend and now husband, Joe, would sometimes join and overheard the comical stories. Unbeknownst to Laura (or Andy), the wheels in Joe’s head started to turn as he had the perfect person in mind for Laura…Andy!
Joe and Andy have been friends since elementary school and Joe had a feeling we would be a good fit so he began playing matchmaker behind the scenes.
On July 27, 2016, Natasha at Joe’s request sent Laura a text message asking if she wanted to have dinner with her and Joe that Saturday night while Joe sent the same text message to Andy inviting him to dinner as well. We both showed up to dinner not knowing we were walking into a blind date!
The two of us had a great time getting to know each other that night. Andy was attracted to Laura’s smile, personality, and the dessert she brought! Laura was intrigued by Andy’s sense of humor, passion for his work, the wine he brought and the knowledge he had on the subject!
We spent the rest of the summer enjoying getting to know each other. We hadn’t told many people about the other yet when we coincidently ended up at Mohegan Sun on the same weekend. Andy was there for Joe’s bachelor party and Laura for her future sister-in-law Becky’s bachelorette party.
A secret kiss in the lobby was not so secret after all as the next morning we both faced questions from inquisitive friends wanting to know more details and finally understanding what was making us both so happy. By September, we were exclusively dating.
Our first fall was filled with meeting each other’s families and friends. We also attended two special weddings together, Joe & Natasha’s and Daniel & Becky’s. We got to ring in the New Year in each other’s arms and had never been happier!
Those first six months were the beginning of our love story. As we got to know one another better, we discovered that we enjoyed so many of the same things. We’re both home bodies who enjoy spending time with our families and close friends. We truly enjoy each other's company, whether it is a movie on the couch, traveling to a beautiful tropical getaway, hanging out in our yard enjoying the pool, vacationing in the mountains to ski, or relaxing on New England beaches. If we’re together, we’re happy.
Laura introduced Andy to her love of theater and Andy introduced Laura to his love of football. Their first Christmas together, Laura surprised him with tickets. They got to attend the coldest regular season game on record together at Gillette and stayed to the end! (What girlfriends do to impress new boyfriends!) Attending a Pats game has become an annual tradition, although now they go to games in the fall!
If we weren’t yet sure how we felt about each other, when COVID hit, our feelings were solidified as our relationship was tested. During the initial shut down, Laura and Andy spent 10 weeks together in their less than 1,000 sq. foot apartment. We were both surprised to find out new things about the other’s work personality as we zoomed day in and day out mere feet from each other. We also learned how annoying we found the other’s breathing to be.
COVID did bring a bright spot for us. We had planned to get a puppy pre-covid and she arrived July 2020. We welcomed Indee, our sweet miniature labradoodle into our family. We often comment we don’t remember what we did before her because our routine quickly changed to include family walks, extra snuggles, and way more talk about poop! She has helped us experience another level of caring and love not only for each other but for our family unit.
We were both lucky to have an heirloom piece of jewelry. The piece from Laura’s side was the nesting ring her paternal grandfather gave to his wife to celebrate an anniversary and finish her set of rings. The ring from Andy’s side belonged to his great grandmother. Each piece was gifted to the couple by their respective Aunties. We wanted to combine parts from both pieces to make something special rooted in family history.
Andy and Laura took both rings to Josh at Freedman Jewelers, who also made a handful of other family members engagement rings, to start building a custom piece. Laura had a lot of say in the beginning of the process but the final decisions were all Andy and he did a wonderful job.
Now the pressure was on.
Laura knew a ring was a reality and Andy needed to get a move on. The two had a romantic weekend away planned to celebrate their sixth anniversary and Andy knew this was the perfect time.
The morning of the anniversary, gifts were exchanged. Patriot’s tickets for Andy and a small jewelry box for Laura…that did not have a ring in it! The “joy” of getting a beautiful pair of earrings was written all over her face.
Andy was trying to throw Laura off the scent but by doing so almost got thrown out of the house! The couple spent the day relaxing, enjoying everything Westerly, RI had to offer. While Laura was getting ready for dinner, Andy worked up the courage to propose with a little help from Indee.
We celebrated with an amazing dinner. They knew we were newly engaged and pulled out all the stops for us. We both agree that was one of the best meals we have even eaten. We finished the night by sitting on the back deck of the rental house, gazing at the beautiful sky.
We have learned a lot about each other over our seven years together including likes and dislikes, things that make the other laugh, cry, and lose it completely. It’s been a journey with so many great memories as we’ve grown together, learned about compromise, and turned two lives into one.
