International travel to Maine

Though Portland has its own regional airport, it serves only domestic flights in the summer. We recommend flying into Boston if you're coming from across the pond. New York is also a safe option (JFK or Newark NJ), but is 200 miles south of Boston. Either area requires a second leg of travel to get to Maine.

Travel to Maine from US cities

Getting from Boston to the Portland Area

1. Driving: It's about a two hour drive between the two cities.2. Train: The Amtrak <a href="https://amtrakdowneaster.com/about-us/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Downeaster</a> goes from Boston North station to Portland in two and a half hours. Please be aware tickets can get expensive if you don't <a href="https://www.amtrak.com/home.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">book in advance</a> so plan accordingly. The train also goes beyond Portland if you want to explore Freeport, Brunswick, or further.

Getting from New York to the Portland Area

1. Driving: Expect weekend traffic to make this about a 6 hour ride from JFK airport, or about a 7.5 hour ride from Ronkonkoma. For all you Long Islanders, the Cross Sound ferry out of Orient Point is a good option to skip city and Connecticut I-95 traffic.2. Train: There are several options to combine Amtrak lines to get from Penn Station to Portland in around 8 hours. As always, book in advance and make sure you understand the potential Boston-area station transfers.3. Flights: Portland Jetport has several flights a day from New York-area airports. Make sure you book the correct Portland-- we'll laugh at you if you end up in Oregon!

While there are plenty of Uber/Lyft options in downtown Portland please be aware the wait time could be long from Caswell Farm and it is advisable to schedule pick up as they are unlikely to be circling the area.

Area hotels and AirBnB/VRBOs

If you're planning on camping at Caswell on Saturday night or driving yourself further afield, there is more accommodation (including hotels) in nearby Freeport, Yarmouth, and Brunswick. We would not recommend booking accommodations on any of the Casco Bay islands -- you'll have to take a ferry and they are typically very crowded in the summer.

There is ample space for camping and tents at Caswell Farm literally steps from our reception and party! It is possible to camp both Friday and Saturday night on site. Please indicate when you RSVP if you will be camping on site for one or both nights.

Important Information For Campers 

Food and DrinkYou are welcome to camp Friday and Saturday night but please do note we do not have provisions for breakfast or lunch for campers at the venue on Saturday. We recommend heading out and exploring the area until it is time to put on your finest attire! The town of Gray is not too far away while Portland and Freeport are just 20-25 minutes down the road for all your food and exploring needs! CampingNo RVs or campers are allowed on site. However, feel free to use any size tent. The camping area and facilities, are less than five minutes walk from all the main events but are secluded enough to offer you some peace and quiet. AmenitiesThere are onsite toilets for a morning refresh and an outside shower available to campers. The bathroom facilities include a full length mirror to check your wedding fashion in!

Portland has a great food scene in a compact area. In the mood for seafood? We like the casual vibes and live music at <a href="https://www.portlandlobstercompany.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Portland Lobster Company</a>. <a href="https://clambarportland.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Clam Bar</a> and <a href="https://highrollerlobster.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">High Rollers</a> are also good low-key seafood options. <a href="https://www.mrtunamaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mr. Tuna</a> (the Mr. Tuna roll is its namesake for a reason) and <a href="https://yosakumaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Yosaku</a> are particularly great for sushi. If you're looking for something special, check out <a href="https://www.eventideoysterco.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Eventide</a> for oysters, brown butter lobster rolls, and dirty dirty martinis (with oyster brine-- really, it's our favourite!). Some other favourites of ours are <a href="https://www.ottoportland.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Otto</a> or <a href="https://www.portlandpie.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Portland Pie Company</a> for pizza, <a href="https://www.terlingua.me/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Terlingua</a> for southwest-style BBQ, <a href="https://www.duckfat.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Duckfat</a> for poutine, and <a href="https://www.sichuankitchenportland.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Szechuan Kitchen</a> for Chinese (the Mapo Tofu and Spicy Sour Soup Noodles are particularly good) . We've followed many great recommendations from the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/platesofportlandmaine" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Plates of Portland IG page</a>, who is way more on top of new Portland spots than we are.

Bakeries and Coffee

Portland's great food scene extends to cafes and bakeries. <a href="https://standardbakingco.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Standard Baking</a> is famous and unless you get there early (and get the Morning Bun), has the lines to prove it. We also like<a href="https://breadandfriendsmaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Bread and Friends</a>, <a href="https://www.tandemcoffee.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tandem Coffee</a> (favourite coffee beans), and <a href="https://coffeebydesign.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Coffee by Design</a>. Outside of Portland, <a href="https://www.scratchbakingco.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Scratch Baking</a> and <a href="https://nightmovesbread.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Night Moves Bakery</a> in South Portland are great. If you make your way up to Brunswick, <a href="https://wildoatsbakery.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Wild Oats</a> is a must for soups, sandwiches, cookies, coffee... you name it.

Breweries and Bars

<a href="https://www.allagash.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Allagash Brewing</a> is a Maine classic, though it is about a 15 minute drive north of downtown. <a href="https://bissellbrothers.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bissell Brothers</a> is also just out of walking distance (and beware of the parking fees), but has a fantastic range of beers. <a href="https://oxbowbeer.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Oxbow</a> is a great in-town option, as is <a href="https://www.camppennant.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Camp Pennant</a>. <a href="https://www.novelmaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Novel</a> is a super fun book bar with a solid selection of cocktails, board games, and books you can read for free while hanging out. If you're not in Portland, check out <a href="https://mainebeercompany.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Maine Beer Company</a>. It's probably our favourite (get a pizza and Lunch IPA or if they have it Wolfe's Neck IPA). <a href="https://www.mastlandingbrewing.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mast Landing</a> in Freeport is another great choice. Katie used to live right next to <a href="https://www.flightdeckbrewing.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Flight Deck Brewing</a> in Brunswick and would recommend both their beers and pizza, if you're in the Brunswick-Bath area.

Ice Cream & Gelato

We LOVE <a href="https://www.gelatofiasco.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gelato Fiasco</a> - they let you try every flavour and you can have as many flavours (yes really) as you want in any size plus they have good non-dairy options. We can recommend Strawberry Balsamic, Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake, and Ripe Mango but they have so many more we want to try! We haven't been (yet) but <a href="https://www.fearlessflavor.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mount Desert Island Ice Cream</a> has good reviews and bougie flavours (Coriander Lemon Curd anyone or Pain Perdu)! Additionally <a href="https://bealsicecream.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Beal’s Famous Old Fashioned Ice Cream</a> has very good reviews.

Museums 

We haven't hit up many Portland-area museums, but we've heard great things about the <a href="https://www.kitetails.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Maine Children's Museum</a> from our friends with kids. We've also heard that Maine lobstering tours with <a href="https://www.luckycatch.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lucky Catch</a> are a great time-- and you can take your lobsters straight from the boat to <a href="https://www.portlandlobstercompany.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Portland Lobster Company</a> for a fresh-caught dinner. If you visit the <a href="https://cryptozoologymuseum.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">International Cryptozoology Museum</a> next to <a href="https://bissellbrothers.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bissell Brothers</a> Brewery, let us know!

Tours

In Portland you can get guided tours by either land or sea. <a href="https://www.cascobaylines.com/maine-boat-tours/specialty-cruises/sunset/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Casco Bay Ferry lines</a> and several private companies offer sunset tours by boat. The <a href="https://mainenarrowgauge.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Narrow Gauge Railway</a> has short scenic rail tours along the eastern edge of the peninsula, and <a href="https://portlandfiretours.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Portland Fire Tours</a> is highly visible all summer with tours from a vintage fire truck. It wouldn't be a recommendation list from us if we didn't include some whale watching and seabird spotting options. As of right now (Autumn 2024) we have not tried any of these tours and we will be very jealous of you! <a href="https://newenglandecoadventures.com/portland-adventures/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">New England Eco Adventure</a> have tours out of Portland on some very zippy exciting rib boats for whale watching and nature tours. If you want to go on a bigger boat there is <a href="https://www.odysseywhalewatch.com/maine-whale-watching/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Odyssey Whale Watching</a> also out of Portland. If you have a car there are options further afield too including <a href="https://www.boothbayboattrips.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cap’n Fish’s Whale Watch</a> in Boothbay Harbor (yes the lack of U hurts Leila deeply) and <a href="https://firstchancewhalewatch.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">First Chance Whale Watch</a> in Kennebunk. In July you are likely to see a wealth of whale and seabird species as well as dolphins, seals, and seabirds (bring your BIG camera)!

Hiking

From flat coastal trails to strenuous mountain climbs, Maine is full of great hikes. If you're here for a while, <a href="https://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Acadia National Park</a> is a 4 hour drive north along the coast and absolutely stunning in July. Don't overlook <a href="https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-natural-attractions/grafton-notch-state-park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Grafton Notch State Park</a> or the <a href="https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-natural-attractions/white-mountain-national-forest" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">White Mountains</a> to the west, either. The <a href="https://appalachiantrail.org/?campaignid=12164095800&amp;adgroupid=120580500681&amp;adid=593877753032" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Appalachian Trail</a> runs through this area and spurs off into many worthwhile day hikes. <a href="https://www.wolfesneck.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Wolf Neck Farms in Freeport</a> and many of the <a href="https://hhltmaine.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Harpswell Heritage Land Trust</a> trails in the Brunswick area are kid-friendly and hit the "pine woods next to rocky coastline" spot without having to drive all the way to Acadia. Locally in Portland, the <a href="https://www.trails.org/trail/eastern-prom-trail/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Eastern Promenade Trail</a> is a nice walk along Portland's eastern shore. <a href="https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-natural-attractions/mackworth-island" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mackworth Island</a> is easily accessible by car and has a perimeter trail along its beaches. The <a href="https://www.cascobaylines.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Casco Bay Ferry</a> line can bring you out on day excursions to Portland's many residential islands. Let us know if you're looking for a specific type of hike and we can give you some recommendations!

Beaches

Maine isn't known for sandy beaches, but you can scratch that itch at <a href="https://www.southportlandlandtrust.org/willard-beach" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Willard Beach</a> in South Portland, <a href="https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-natural-attractions/crescent-beach-state-park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Crescent Beach State Park</a> in Cape Elizabeth, <a href="https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-natural-attractions/popham-beach-state-park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Popham Beach State Park</a> in Phippsburg, or at any number of beaches between York and Old Orchard Beach. Maine IS known for its lighthouses-- <a href="https://portlandheadlight.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Portland Head Light</a> in Cape Elizabeth is as pretty as its many pictures imply.

Shopping

The <a href="https://www.mainemall.com/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Maine Mall</a> is in South Portland and has pretty much any store you might need to pop into. <a href="https://www.travelportland.com/neighborhoods/downtown/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Downtown Portland</a> has a mixture of vacation-town tourist shops and high-end shops dotting the streets. It also has a <a href="https://www.traderjoes.com/home" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Trader Joe's</a> and <a href="https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Whole Foods</a>. Freeport is home to the original <a href="http://www.llbean.com/freeport" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LL Bean</a> store. It's a giant complex of multiple stores and frequently hosts events in the summer. If you haven't been before, check it out! It's open literally 24/7. Keep in mind that as of winter 24-25, LL Bean is renovating their flagship store and has a lot of their clothing in a giant climate-controlled temporary structure. It's still pretty neat but is definitely different from what you might be used to if you've visited the store in the past. Freeport also has a <a href="https://www.onefreeportvillagestation.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">small outlet mall</a> with a lot of high-end and outdoor equipment companies like Patagonia, the North Face, Oakley, and more.

Book shops

If you know us, you know we love a book store. Portland has several independent bookstores-- check out <a href="https://www.shermans.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sherman's</a> (oldest bookstore in Maine), <a href="https://longfellowbooks.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Longfellow Books</a>, or <a href="https://greenhandbookshop.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Green Hand</a>. If you want a bookish hangout spot, visit <a href="https://www.novelmaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Novel</a> a secondhand bookshop/bar/coffeeshop where you can read (or buy) a random book while sipping either a coffee or a cocktail.

We are looking forward to celebrating our wedding in July surrounded by amazing family and friends. We are so excited that you will be joining us in Maine and truly no gifts are required. If you would like to give us a gift, that is incredibly kind and we are immensely grateful. With a hectic summer full of wedding activities and fieldwork we are not able to immediately drive off into the sunset for a honeymoon! We would like to take some time to plan a wonderful adventure in the next 12-18 months as we navigate our continuing international love story! We will be collecting RSVPS through our wedding planning software account, Aisle Planner. Please follow the steps below to submit your RSVP, dietary restrictions and allergies or special requests. Please RSVP by May 21, 2025. 1. Type in Your Full Name &amp; Select "Find Your Invitation" You can select your name as well as everyone else in your party. 3. Guest Information - Respond with Allergies Type any dietary restrictions or allergies in the box to the right of each guest's name. If there are no allergies leave blank. 4. RSVP Attendance- Respond to Each Event Use the drop down arrow under each name to RSVP to each of the wedding related events as "attending" or "declined." 5. Select a Meal under "Reception" We will be serving a family style meal that includes Cedar Planked Salmon and (Menu Change!) Ramp Chimichurri New York Strip. No need to choose an entrée/main -- both will be served along with sides and salads that showcase the delicious seasonal produce our venue Caswell Farm grows. We will have vegan/vegetarian meals upon request. Please select either 'Family Style" or "Vegan/Vegetarian" from the drop down menu on your RSVP. 6. Share if you are joining us to camp at Caswell We have our venue <a href="https://www.caswellfarmmaine.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Caswell Farm and Wedding Barn</a> all weekend (Friday to Sunday) if you would like to camp (no RVs or Campers) please indicate on your RSVP. Review Before Submission Double check that you have replied to every box before submitting using the gold "RSVP" button.
