Balboa Park is a large area with options for: Garden, Museums, The Prado restaurant, and Reuben H. Fleet center (a place for science activities geared towards kids/families, and a place for all ages to watch an educational "movie" on a big IMAX screen--feels like you're moving in your seat!)

If you decide to go, exercise caution, bring your passport, smaller dollar bills: $1s, $5s, $10s (in case vendors don’t have change in dollars) and don't dress flashy (no jewelry). The drive to Mexico is just 25 minutes from Downtown San Diego.
Take Freeway 5 South until you arrive at the USA and Mexico border. Park California State side (San Ysidro, CA) and walk across into Tijuana, Mexico, or drive into Mexico and visit Tijuana, Rosarito or Ensenada.
