Rudy and Lexy met in high school and are classic high school sweethearts, both alums of Communications Arts High. Rudy loves to say Lexy gave him the “googly eyes” at sophomore orientation and even offered to help with his locker—his version, of course. Lexy remembers it a bit differently.

The two didn’t actually connect until sophomore year started, when fate (and the school schedule) landed them in the same chemistry class—and no, the “chemistry” wasn’t just the subject! Rudy sat two seats behind Lexy, and every time a group assignment came up, he’d work his way into her conversations with her friends. One day, he followed her on Instagram, and with each lab pairing and group project, their casual chats turned into a friendship. Rudy claims it was love at first sight, though Lexy made him work for it, keeping it strictly school-related.

As the football player and cheerleader, they seemed destined to be the perfect high school romance—if only Lexy hadn’t played hard to get. Undeterred, Rudy kept asking her out, his heart set on winning her over. Rudy was ready to make his move the second he got his driver’s license, literally just one day before he first asked her out. Eager to get her alone, he offered to take her to Raising Cane’s, her favorite, during their lunch period. But Lexy, ever cautious, brought her entire friend group along.

Rudy wasn’t giving up, though, and halfway through junior year, he managed to talk her into a “real date.” After a little nudge from her mom, Lexy agreed. Rudy arrived that Saturday night with pink roses, thanked her parents, opened her door like a gentleman, and even let her pick every song. Lexy tried to test their compatibility by playing the most random songs she could think of, yet to her surprise, he knew them all—and they sang along the entire way to their date. Their date at Main Event was a hit, filled with laughs and a little competition (Lexy swears she won). They ended up spending hours more together, grabbing tacos at Lexy’s favorite spot on one side of town and stopping for dessert on the other side of town. Even after hours together, they weren’t ready to call it a night. They ended up parked near a shopping center, talking past midnight about everything—from their families to both losing their grandfathers, who meant so much to them. From that night on, they were inseparable. Lexy realized, despite herself, that everything about him just felt right.

Shortly after their date, Rudy asked her to meet his family. To her surprise, she realized that his house was the same one she’d passed so many times before to pick up her little brother from his mom’s house. As it turned out, Rudy and her brother had been neighborhood friends for years. One day, she was at Rudy’s house when her brother came knocking, looking for Rudy and his brother. She opened the door, surprised, and he just looked at her and said, “What are you doing here?”. It’s now an ongoing joke that Lexy’s brother technically met Rudy first and she “stole his childhood best friend.”

As the two spent more and more time together, one day, Lexy let her feelings slip and accidentally said “I love you” just two weeks after their first date. She genuinely meant it but hadn’t planned on saying it so soon. She remembers finding every reason to love him on that first night, and everything that came after was just the cherry on top. The next day, he showed up with flowers, chocolates, and balloons arranged with “I love you too,” and a necklace, officially asking her to be his girlfriend. That was only the beginning of their forever!
