Our Wedding

We met in the first weeks of starting medical school together at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. We crossed paths at many class-wide events, including board game nights, and we even played Valorant together one night. The week of white coat ceremony, Viet threw a beach get-together to celebrate the boot getting removed from his broken foot (spoiler alert: the boot did not end up coming off until a month later lol), and we first met face-to-face then.

How we met

Fast forward 7 months, we along with our close friends went on a spontaneous trip to Boston for the weekend. Of course, us two were supposed to share a checked bag to save money. Lily stayed up the night before our flight to help Viet finish packing. In Boston, we could not stop talking to each other, from walking in the snowy streets of Chinatown to messing with the actors at the Tea Party museum. On our last night, we UberEats’ed McDonald’s and stayed up until 5am, packing again and listening to music with our headphones until we fell asleep.

Catching flights or catching feelings…

Two and a half years later, we’ve been inseparable ever since. The late night talks literally have not ended, and we still struggle to go to sleep on time. Lily turned Viet into a foodie (iykyk) and put him on anime and k-pop, while Viet taught Lily how to play tennis, properly lift at the gym, and converted her into the Apple ecosystem. Together, we’ve learned how to balance family, friends, staying active, hobbies, school, and work, all by each other’s side. We’ve traveled to many places together, including Texas, New York, DC, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Oregon, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, our dream trip to Hawaii🥰, and a 21-day trip across Europe! &amp; we always share a suitcase together ;)

Now what?!

We are both applying to psychiatry residency and will find out where we match on March 21, 2025. After a long four years, we will graduate medical school together on May 31, 2025 before we start residency in late June/early July. For our honeymoon, we will be traveling to Tokyo, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea! We are so excited to see where the future takes us and our dog, Cloud. We would love if you pray for us and our new beginnings🙏❤️

Jasmine is my younger sister and best friend! Jasmine has been my biggest supporter ever since I can remember. Anyone who knows me knows I take her everywhere with me. Even with our 8-year age difference, we always have each other’s back. I could not be luckier to have a sister like her 😘

I met Metha during my first year of med school, and from day one, it felt like I’d known him forever. He’s been there for every high and low—whether it was stressing over exams, navigating the messiness of med school romances, or showing up at my door with a “let's get out of galveston” look on his face. He’s seen me go from the awkward first conversations with Lily to getting down on one knee to propose. We’ve shared a lot of laughs, a few tears, and many spontaneous adventures that usually start with “Let’s just go and see how it goes” Metha is one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met—a true gentleman, and my go-to guy when life throws a curveball (or we just want to hit up a last-minute rave). He’s not just a friend—he’s a brother, through and through.

Steven is my future brother-in-law, and though he’s usually the quiet guy chilling in the background, he’s always been a solid presence for every major moment. The first time I met him was when I was nervously sitting down for dinner at Lily’s house—since then, I’ve gotten to know the guy who’s always there when you need him, no questions asked. I’ll never forget the time he went out with me during the end of my second year of med school; I may have celebrated a bit too hard and ended up throwing up in the back of his car (sorry Steve). Despite that, he’s remained as laid-back and supportive as ever. I’m lucky to be able to call him family soon.

I met Darrand through Metha during med school, and our friendship took off fast, fitting, considering the first time we really hung out was at a rave. From the jump, Darrand’s been that guy: outgoing, easy to talk to, and genuinely kind. He’s the kind of person who can walk into a room full of strangers and leave with ten new friends. We've been through a lot—korean spas, monopoly deal nights, Chicago, and that one time where he almost died in a car accident (thankfully, he’s still here and still down to party with a busted leg). Darrand’s got a huge heart and a loyalty that runs deep. I’m lucky to have him in my corner.

My little brother, Tailuong, may be ten years younger than me, but he’s always felt like one of the crew. When we were younger, we bonded over video games, and as we got older, he never hesitated to hang with me and my friends—even tagging along to medical school conferences and adventures, like that one trip to Round Rock and the water park with Jasmine. He’s introverted and quiet, but when he speaks, he means it—and when he commits to something, he follows through. Seeing him grow into the person he is now has been one of the coolest things. I’m proud to have him standing by my side.

Cindy is my cousin and my first ever built-in best friend. Throwback to the days of talking on the phone on weekday evenings when the minutes were “free” and having dance parties in her room! Always grateful for her listening ear and one of the few people who can truly understand our family 🙂‍↕️😂

Aneesa is the first friend I've ever made since pre-K and beyond. We even shared our small dorm room and apartment bedroom together at UT Austin for two whole years. Looking back can’t believe we had no need for personal space lolol. Genuinely the funniest person, so easy to talk to, gives the best advice, and always takes care of everyone 😚

Okay, but have you really been to Houston if you didn’t go to a food hall? POST has so many great food options in a trendy venue with great rooftop skyline views. Other food hall options include Understory to check out the Houston tunnels, the Conservatory, and Bravery.

Easily our favorite boba place. Get the avocado pomelo cheese foam or the crème brûlée less sweet. For dessert, we also like MeetFresh, Happy Lemon, Yumcha, the Bep, Six Ping bakery, and Long Coffee.

Möge Tee

Tasty sichuan food that has something for everyone, family style. Three locations in Houston, but we think this one is the prettiest. Try the cumin lamb, spicy crispy chicken, dry pot fish, and garlic bacon. You can't go wrong with anything.

Mala Sichuan Bistro

The best Indian food, huge venue and still always packed. Himalaya is also very good, visited by Anthony Bourdain.

Take us back to Vietnam with some trendy street food! Hem is a super popular, new restaurant that features classic Vietnamese street foods like razor clams, snail, salted egg oysters, and more.

We love this KBBQ place for the ambience and central location in Montrose, and their marinated short rib melts in your mouth! It is on the pricier side, so other good KBBQ options in Chinatown include Honey Pig for a la carte and Garosu or Handam for AYCE.

Bori - Montrose

People may like Liuyishou, Shabu En, or Shabu Zone for hot pot, but we love XLK for the immersive vibe and quality meats. Not AYCE, but more quality food imo.

XiaoLongKan

A local favorite sushi spot with a very generous happy hour from 3-6pm with BOGO appetizers. Be prepared to wait with a large group, but it is worth it! In Chinatown, Sushi Miyagi is another authentic mom-and-pop store (only open during lunch) and Iwa Ya also has good value.

Oishii

Our go-to pho place in Chinatown. Authentic, flavorful pho that is always bustling with people. We also like Pho Saigon in Midtown, Pho Binh, Sapa, and (our secret favorite) Pho Quynh in 99 Ranch.

Pho Dien

Our favorite dim sum place with the best egg yolk custard buns in Houston. Can’t miss! Next door, go to Linda's Tropical Fruit for some refreshing nuoc mia.We also go to Crown Seafood and Fung's Kitchen for traditional pushcarts.

Golden Dim Sum

Yummy sushi handrolls in a bar setting. Cute and intimate for a fun date night. Hando and NoriNori are also very good.

Handies Douzo

Want something a little more fancy? Delicious small plates to share with the table -- think tapas but Japanese fusion. Lol no pictures bc the food was too good! Must tries: Wagyu skewers, foie gras, and the cocktails. They also have a new sister sushi restaurant, Katami. Always packed, get a reservation online if you can!

Kata Robata

How about drinks and games? Flight Club is a fun place for a group to play darts while having some drinks and light snacks. Definitely get a reservation for a big group in the evening, as this place gets booked up.

There are lots of great bars in Midtown, but we like this one for the indoor/outdoor seating and the lights. If it’s not for you, you can hop over to nearby bars, like Dogwood, Unicorn Disco, or chill at Social Beer Garden.

Pretty Liar

Okay, just one shot... Night’s not over until we go to One Shot! Our favorite pocha karaoke bar with genuinely good Korean food. Come for soju and beer towers and stay for the rose tteokboki and spicy pork belly.
