The quickest drive to Salida, via 285, is one of the easier mountain drives in Colorado and takes you through a range of mountain passes and high valleys. If you're looking for food on the way, the options are somewhat limited, but Lindsay and I recommend:

If you are returning to Denver Sunday afternoon there WILL be heavy traffic on 285 going through Kenosha pass and through Bailey due to the leaves beginning to peak.
This traffic tends to pick up around noon and can peak out to up to 3-4 hours of sitting in traffic.
We HIGHLY recommend driving through Canon City and up I25 to avoid this delay. This is a beautiful canyon drive, and also allows you to check out a different part of the state, including the beautiful Royal Gorge.
