First permanent US settlement of The Pacific Coast and has the first US post office west of the Rocky Mountains (1847)

In the late 1800's 22% of the population was Chinese

In 1883 and again in 1922, downtown Astoria was devastated by fire.

1945 - 35 canneries could be found along the Columbia River but in 1974, Bumblebee Seafood Corporation moved its headquarters out of Astoria. The last cannery closed in 1980

1966 - Astoria-Megler Bridge was opened

1989 - Astoria's lumber industry likewise declined; Astoria Plywood Mill, the largest employer, closed

1996 - Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway discontinued service to Astoria

Today - the center of Astoria's economy is tourism: sport fishing, art, microbrewery scene, weekly street marke
