Margaritaville The Orginal - Key West

As it says on the web site, "Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville - a state of mind is now a state of being". When it comes right down to it, Margaritaville is what everyone thinks of when you mention beaches and Florida beach bars. So everyone enters this Florida beach bar with a certain expectation. And that expectation is always met.

Margaritaville in Key West is home of the original retail store established in 1985. Soon after the cafe was added, and the rest is history. The Key West Margaritaville is often times just a great restaurant with great drinks. But when the bands show up, this cafe turns into a another great Florida beach bar with all the right atmosphere.....except a beach.

When you enter Margaritaville you may notice the hurricane painted on the ceiling. Or it maybe the stage that looks like it's just waiting for Jimmy to show up. You definitely know that you are someplace special. The food is great, and the burgers are paradise. I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes.

Margartiaville is always crowded, day or night. It is a busy place and the activity is amazing. One night we were there eating at the bar. We watched two bartenders work so hard and so fast it was surreal. These guys loved what they did and did everything they could to take care of us. Impressive. It was a great show, and encouraged us to keep ordering so we could keep watching.

There is live music at this Florida beach bar during the evenings. You can check their web site calendar for who is appearing and the times. It does vary. The quality of the bands is top notch, and Margaritaville Key West brings in some great Trop Rock bands such as Boat Drunks and Jimmy Parrish.

If Jimmy Buffett doesn't know how to make a good Florida beach bar, then who does?

Tennessee Williams is known as one of the greatest 20th century American playwrights. His works such as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and many others are classics of the American stage which earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, Tony Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as many other literary awards. His work reached world-wide audiences in the 1950s when his plays were adapted into motion pictures. His works remain relevant today as his plays continue to be performed and studied internationally.

Tennessee Williams visited and lived in Key West from 1941 until his death in 1983. It is believed that he wrote the final draft of Street Car Named Desire while staying at the La Concha Hotel in Key West in 1947. He established residence here in 1949 and in 1950 bought the house at 1431 Duncan Street that was his home for 34 years. He was part of the literary movement that resulted in Key West and the Florida Keys being recognized as the cultural and historical location it is today.

Visitors to our city and locals are invited to tour this educational and historic exhibit. They can enjoy and learn about Williams’ literary accomplishments and life in Key West through an extensive collection of photographs, first edition plays and books, rare newspaper and magazine articles, videos, a typewriter used by the author while writing in Key West and other artifacts on display.

Key West Lighthouse

Almost immediately after the U.S. Navy established a base in Key West in 1823, the need for a lighthouse became evident. Erecting a lighthouse was essential in assuring the safe arrival of both military and commercial vessels navigating the shallow, reef-laden waters off the Florida Keys

The current lighthouse opened in 1848 with a woman as its Keeper; nearly unheard of during the 19th century. In the years following, the Key West Lighthouse underwent a number of upgrades including the installation of a Third Order Fresnel Lens, an extension to the tower which allowed the light to be seen from a greater distance, the addition of Keeper’s Quarters, and finally the electrification of the light.

In 1969, the U.S. Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Lighthouse since there was no longer a need for a full-time Keeper due to technological advancements. Today, this sentinel of the sea stands as a museum dedicated to Key West’s maritime heritage and to the men and women who bravely kept the light burning through the threats of war and weather.

Today, visitors can walk up the 88 steps to the top of the light as well as explore the belongings, photographs, and words of the lighthouse Keepers and their families who lived a now obsolete, yet never forgotten, way of life.
