To South Bend. You can book a flight to South Bend International Airport, located about 15 minutes from the Notre Dame campus. Ride sharing apps like Uber or Lyft run approximately $15-$20 USD. If you choose to rent a car, the airport has representatives from most of the major car rental agencies.

To Chicago. Flights to the two major Chicago area airports, O’Hare International Airport or Midway International Airport, are often cheaper but require additional commute to South Bend by car or rail.

You can take public transit from the airports into downtown Chicago (Chicago Transit Authority; Blue Line from O’Hare or Orange Line from Midway) and catch the South Shore Line commuter train, which departs from Millennium Station and terminates at the South Bend Regional Airport. (See section below on arriving by rail.) If you choose to drive, South Bend is about 2.5 hours from O’Hare Airport and 1.5 to 2.0 hours from Midway Airport, depending on traffic.

A third option that will avoid that will avoid the Chicago hassle is to fly into either Grand Rapids, MI or Indianapolis, IN, and drive a rental car to South Bend. Both drives are roughly two hours.

BY RAIL

From Chicago. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) operates train service called the South Shore Line between Millennium Station in Chicago and South Bend International Airport. You can take the Blue Line on the "L" (https://www.transitchicago.com/howto/riding-the-train/), a public transit train system that operates in the city, from O'hare airport to Millennium Station in downtown Chicago.

Then, take the South Shore Line to the South Bend International Airport, roughly 90 minute ride. Tickets for the South Shore Line may be purchased at Millennium Station, on the South Shore Line website (https://mysouthshoreline.com/), or on the South Shore Line app downloadable from the iPhone app store (recommended). Alternatively, Amtrak also offers rail service from Chicago Union Station to South Bend.
