Our story began in 2019 during William’s intern year of residency in Houston. For the first two and a half months that William was overworked and underpaid at Memorial Hermann, he had no idea that his future wife was working in the same hospital a few floors away.

This is where William wants to pretend that we had an adorable meet cute at work, that our relationship was formed organically. Alas, that is not the case. In a dream world, this wedding would be sponsored by Hinge (that’s a dating app for all you folk that are lucky enough to not know). Yes, it’s true. This is a modern romance, an online dating success story.

Only six months into our blooming romance, we were blessed with a global pandemic to navigate. It was indisputably hard for everybody, but definitely a little more complicated for a couple who were both on the “frontlines” of this world altering event. We were faced with the decision of whether or not to risk our health by continuing to spend time together or to be smart and stay away from each other until things settled down. Maybe it’s obvious, but we decided to take a leap of faith. Our relationship may be 4 years old, but it was cultivated during the pandemic, so it’s like we’ve been together for a decade in COVID time.

We come from quite different worlds and have enjoyed embracing each other’s cultures and favourite past-times. For Madeleine that meant learning what a “first down” is (that’s part of American football for all the foreigners), and learning how to conquer the green slopes on a pair of skis. For William that really just meant trying to understand what everybody was saying (kidding, sort of), and learning that the “little purse” he will be wearing on our wedding day is a sporran, and the “little knife” on his sock is a Sgian Dubh (pronounced 'ski-en doo').

We are so appreciative of the Americans making the trek overseas for our wedding, and Madeleine cannot wait to see the look of fear in William’s eyes when he hears Scottish dialects he hasn’t heard before. Honestly though, thank you so much for celebrating with us- we can’t wait to see you there!
