Volos airport is connected to the city of Volos by the Magnesia Intercity Bus (www.ktelvolou.gr).
Taxis are also available outside the terminal. It's a 35minutes drive from the airport to the city.
In the central hall of the terminal there are car hire agencies including the international companies Hertz, Budget, Avis.
- Alternative airports: Thessaloniki (SKG), about 2hours drive to Volos. Athens airport (ATH) is about 4 hours drive to Volos.
From Australia or US/ Canada / India:
The best route is fly to Athens. Then you have the following options:
Drive to Volos
(about 4 hours). This is probably the easiest option.
Take a domestic flight to Thessaloniki airport
and then drive to Volos (2 hours). (There are no direct flights to Volos from Athens.)
Fly to Skiathos
If you want to make an extra trip on an island, your alternative is to get a direct flight from Athens to the island of Skiathos (Olympic Air and Sky express operate flights, you can check out skyscanner), spend a few days there and then take the boat to Volos (the ferry takes 2h 45mns, the dolphin takes 1h 15mns).
Catch the train to Volos.
For trains you can book tickets here: https://www.trainose.gr/. The trains can be unreliable and the journey will take about 4-5 hours.
The train station in Athens is called Stathmos Larissis, and it is connected with the airport by the metro (not a bus). Taxis are relatively cheap too, and the drive should be about 35mins without traffic.
Catch the bus to Volos.
The station is Liosion or Liosia Station (not Kifissos). The trip will take 4 hours door to door. For tickets, there is no way to book online. The best way to reserve tickets is to call them in advance and place a booking.
