It all started July 4th, 2009 in Cedarville, Michigan, where Ryan grew up and where Mary spent all of her summers.Mary was hanging out with Kristen, Ryan's sister, when they first met and immediately hit it off . The initial meeting then sparked a friendship that went on to that fall at the University of Michigan, where Mary was a freshman and Ryan a senior. There were football games and a fraternity formal together, and there was no doubt that Mary and Ryan were a perfect match.
That following summer, Mary was at the Duman house and asked Ryan to go grab her a beer. From that second, he was hooked. Nothing like a Labatt Blue Light to officially start a romance. That whole summer they were completely inseparable until Ryan left for grad school at Michigan Tech in Houghton, MI. There were many trips from Houghton to Ann Arbor that fall, and trips to Houghton that left Mary snowed in for several days longer than planned (neither complained).
After Ryan's time at Michigan Tech, he moved to Houston, TX to start his career at Wood Mackenzie. More distance followed while Mary was finishing up school in Ann Arbor, but they always knew they would be together eventually. After graduating from Michigan, Mary moved to Denver, CO to start her career at Children's Hospital Colorado. Exactly one year to the day after Mary's move out west, Ryan joined in Denver.
Four years of long distance was hard, but proved to be more than worth it.
Ryan and Mary got engaged on February 19th, 2016 in Steamboat Springs, CO. Ryan planned on proposing to Mary the night they arrived in Steamboat, but Mother Nature had other plans. The drive to Steamboat was treacherous, to say the least. Instead of the two and a half hours it should have taken to get there, it took over five hours due to a white out snow storm. During the drive Ryan was totally calm and collected, whistling to the radio, while Mary was in the front seat, sobbing, worried that they would never make it there alive. When they finally arrived at the ski condo, Mary immediately went to bed, ruining Ryan's plan of a proposal that night.
The next day, Ryan was so nervous that he hardly said five words the whole day they spent skiing. Mary, being slightly dramatic as usual, became convinced that he was being quiet because he was planning on breaking up with her. Clearly, she was very wrong. That night Ryan proposed after dinner in the sweetest way with a beautiful ring. After lots of tears from Mary, they called their families and closest friends to share the good news.
Ryan is originally from the Detroit area, and moved to Cedarville, MI at 14 years old. He attended the University of Michigan where he majored in Environmental Science. After undergrad, he attended Michigan Technological University where he received his Master's Degree in Natural Resource Economics. Ryan works as an Energy Analyst at Wood Mackenzie.
Mary grew up in Hamilton, OH and spent all of her summers in Cedarville, MI. She attended the University of Michigan where she majored in Nursing. Immediately after graduation, she moved to Denver, CO. She is a Pediatric Cardiac Nurse at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Mary and Ryan live in the Highlands neighborhood in Denver. In their free time they try to be in the mountains as much as possible where they spend their days skiing, hiking, and camping. They both love nothing more than their friends, their families, and Michigan football.
