My Favorite Humans

A Memoir by Leah Daisy the Miniature Schnauzer

Every dog needs to have a pack; their closest allies and partners in life. When I was first rescued from the beaches of Puerto Rico, I realized just how special my humans were. They gave me endless cuddles and treats, took me to get groomed, and (most importantly of all!) fed me every day.

There was a very strange time in 2020, where my humans never left the house and spent all day with me, every single day! It was during this point that Skylar began talking on the phone, a lot, to a strange human I had never met before. I remember hearing that this new person was coming to my house, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. When I heard the door open, I went running as usual, and saw Matt for the first time. I barked at him as loudly as I possibly could, but he wasn’t scared. Matt started coming over more and more frequently, and I quickly saw how happy Skylar was when he was around. I was delighted to receive twice the cuddles and pets, but also as I watched their friendship and compassion for each other grow deeper with every visit.

One day, Matt and Skylar were sitting on the couch. I wasn’t trying to be nosy, but I overheard Matt ask Skylar if she would be his girlfriend. I hadn’t heard this before, and wasn’t quite sure how to react, but Skylar was ecstatic. She jumped up and hugged Matt. Then, he picked me up and said, “Leah, I’m related to you now!” I finally understood it then. My pack was missing one person all along…
