The meet-cute story of Matthew and Michael varies depending on who you ask.

First, it should be acknowledged that this millennial couple did, in fact, meet on a dating app. Thank you, Hinge!

According to Matthew, after chatting with Michael and generously handing over his cell phone number, which, for the record, he says went untexted, he found himself re-matching with Michael months later and wondering, “Is this the one that got away?”

According to Michael, Matthew left him on read. But after Michael took a much needed break from the app and made his triumphant return, fate stepped in, and the two matched again.

What both versions of the story agree on is that once Matthew and Michael re-matched, it still took a staggering several weeks for them to actually meet in person. Between work interruptions, Matthew forgetting he had a date (classic) and Michael’s trip back home to California causing a handful of reschedules, the two finally, officially met for their first date on May 9 at Ammazzacaffè in Brooklyn.

What felt like only a few minutes quickly turned into hours. As the last guests left, Matthew and Michael found themselves closing down the restaurant, neither quite ready for the night to end. That evening sparked something neither of them could fully explain: a partnership rooted in laughter, deep conversation, and a love that would only continue to grow.
