McKayla and Andrew met through mutual friends in 2016, when Andrew went to St. Louis University and McKayla went to Missouri State University. They hit it off at a party two days before McKayla moved to Florida to work at Disney World for four months. They got to know each other by texting, Snapchatting, and Facetiming until McKayla got back that summer.

As soon as McKayla moved back from Florida, her and Andrew started going on dates in St. Louis. On June 15, they went to a Cardinals game with some of Andrew's Redbull coworkers, where he introduced her as his girlfriend. McKayla was excited and went with it, and then Andrew asked later if they could officially be boyfriend and girlfriend.

McKayla and Andrew started dating Summer 2016, then they dated long distance during their senior year of college. After college, Andrew decided to stay in St. Louis and McKayla moved back to St. Louis from her college town. They traveled frequently, often to see Andrew's parents in Chicago or Denver, see family in Nebraska, or enjoy time at Lake of the Ozarks. In Summer 2019, they moved in together in Saint Charles, Missouri, then got a dog soon afterward. Andrew proposed on Christmas Day 2019.
