Medgine, Medgine, Medgine... her very name is Melodious to me.
I first noticed this pristine Haïtian woman while I was pursuing my undergrad in ministry. Her poise magnetized me so I swiftly introduced myself.
I would sometime see her attending various ministries around campus; her dedication charmed me. We became acquainted, and I attended one of her ceremonies. I even made plans to join a particular ministry she was a part of (ahem..to get to know Jesus better, of course...why else!?).
Unfortunately, I had to return to my hometown in Florida shortly thereafter. Plans foiled. Prior to leaving at the end of that school year, I was on campus to wrap up a few errands. I remember walking pass the girls’ dormitory to see Medgine sitting off to one side of the bench in front of the building. I greeted her and sat down next to her. She seemed stoic this time. She was still and calm, but cold and staring off into the distance. I could tell that something was not well.
We were still just acquaintances, but this time I decided to sit down next to her and we began to speak.
“How are you doing?” I said “fine" she answered, still looking off into the distance "just taking a break from packing.” I smirked within myself, knowing that there was more to it than that. Being caring and crazy enough to pry, I said to her, “is everything alright?” She detached her gaze from the horizon, scanned the grass, looked at her feet and then glanced at me: Perhaps a bit surprised that I sensed her mood beneath her calm exterior, or perhaps she was caught off guard that I would ask.
She began to confide in me, as generally as she could, that she was coming out of a rough relationship. My eyes grew wide as she unfolded before me. In an effort to be helpful, I too confided in her. I shared the lessons learned from a recent relationship. We both opened up even more and spoke on what true love is. There I shared with her the greatest epiphany I had on Love up to that point: “people don’t fall in Love” I asserted, “people walk in Love” meaning that we don’t enter a relationship haphazardly by tripping into it, there are steps the heart must go through in order to attach to another’s heart. Additionally, true Love helps us to Stand, not fall. She agreed.
We bade each other goodbye and went on our way with a warm handshake.
Fast forward for years later. I am in Orlando Florida and I cross paths with a lady from one of our local churches. She remembered me from years ago, and I remember seeing her too, but I had no idea who she was. She invited me to speak at the church she attended. In so doing, she said “so are you married, and do you have any children?” I chuckled and told her “no, ma'am, I am still waiting on God for the right one” without skipping a beat she interjected “well, I do have a niece that just graduated from Oakwood University that’s single”. I knew where this was going. Another attempted church mother hookup that I did not welcome.
I believed that only God can play matchmaker in my life but I quickly found out that God uses people too! So I patronized her and said “oh really, that’s nice, what’s her name?” and she responded “Medgine, do you know her?” My eyes grew big “Yes! I know her! She just graduated? I’ll contact her to say congrats!” That’s all I had in mind to do, that is, until I heard her voice again. “Hi, Bonzil” I melted at the sweet timbre of her voice. But I could not let it show, until I was sure...
I found her online profile saw that she had written to me. We wrote back and forth on the memories of when we last saw each other, our last conversation on the bench, and what we had been up to lately. I began to warm up to her. We eventually exchanged numbers and spoke. Upon hearing her voice again, I was melted. But I could not let it show, until I was sure...
I have been blessed by God in meeting Belschatsar. I give all praises and glory to God who desires that we grow in unconditional love through this divine union and under the loving wings of his Son, Jesus Christ.
I met Belschatsar on the campus of Oakwood University. We were very active in campus ministry so he was not unfamiliar to me. We entered into conversation on the last day of the 2012 spring semester, while all of the students were leaving campus for their summer plans. I was taking a break from packing and decided to go sit outside for a bit of fresh air. There came Belsch and we started to talk. We ended up speaking about relationships and the joining of a man and a woman. We agreed that two people, who enter into a loving relationship with God, will continue to walk in love with God, together. So, there is no such thing as falling in love; we walk in love. So, our conversation ended and we went our separate ways...
About my love life... In college, I learned that the safest and most peaceful love journey is with God as my guide. So I decided to entrust to Him my love life and promised him that I would wait on Him to select my spouse. I prayed that he would reveal his decision to me, as he has done many times before.
Four years later , as I am scrolling through my facebook, I noticed Belschatsar posing in a Sabbath picture with a few family members. I was not aware that my family had known his family for many years. I may have liked the photo but moved on to check other notifications.
A few days later, Martine [who is my Matron of Honor], in a phone call, started to make mention of a kind and God-fearing young man, whom she had known for a long time. I sensed that she was speaking of Belschatsar, so I interrupted her to ask, "Tatie, are you speaking of Belschatsar?" She laughed in amazement. "How did you know that I was speaking of him?" [He actually only came to mind as she was speaking of him]. Even then, I vaguely entertained her praises of him.
Later, I reached out to him on Facebook to say hello. He responded and we talked for a bit about our family and about our last encounter at Oakwood. He also shared with me that He intends to visit Huntsville soon. Our conversation ended and we did not speak for a while...
It was on a friday evening that God showed me in a dream that Belschatsar was one that he had selected for me. I was in disbelief, until I remembered a dream that my mother also had a year prior. My mother was revealed Belschatsar's very family name. At the time, she asked me whether I knew that person and I could not remember anyone by that last name.
A day later, Belschatsar contacted me... and the rest was history.
This journey has been one of exceptional growth for me and Belschatsar. We have seen God mold us through the initial stages of our relationship and he continues to do so now.
I love sharing my thoughts with Belschatsar... In the two years of our relationship, I still look forward to our good evening and good morning calls. He has been my priest, my friend and my lover.
