The Traditional Latin Mass is the Latin Rite of the Catholic Mass celebrated from time immemorial until the 1960s. The TLM at the Oratory of Sts. Gregory and Augustine is legitimately celebrated according to Summorum Pontificum and the authority of the local bishop. This traditional form of worship has experienced quite a resurgence in recent years, and we're happy to share it with you on our wedding day.
The Tradition of the Church has been the bedrock of Michael and Isabella's relationship since the beginning. As we've fallen in love, we're always looking to the love of Our Lord's sacrifice on the cross. We've found that the TLM is the most reverent witness to this sacrifice and the honor due to Almighty God. We hope that you'll appreciate the beauty and solemnity of the ancient Nuptial Mass.
The Mass will be in Latin, with the priest facing the same direction as the people (towards God in the tabernacle). The wedding itself will take place at the beginning of Holy Mass. The prayer of the priest will be chanted aloud or said quietly. Don't worry, the sermon will be given in English! Expect Gregorian chant and periods of silence where contemplation will come easily. As Pius XII wrote, "the chief element of divine worship must be interior." There are many other differences that you'll just have to experience for yourself!
Booklets with the order of the Mass as well as translations of the readings will be provided. It is not expected or required that one understand every word that is being said during the Mass. If you wish to follow along more closely, there are books in each pew that lead you step-by-step through the Mass. However, it is also perfectly fine (and recommended!) to pray the Mass in a way that brings you closest to God. This may be through reading the translations of the Mass, praying your rosary, reflecting upon Holy Scripture, conversing with God in personal prayer, or simply taking in the beauty of the Mass and the glory it brings to God.
Out of reverence for being in the presence of God and to reflect the sacredness of the liturgy, the church has guidelines for appropriate attire that is requested of all who attend Holy Mass.
For both men and women, it is expected that slacks, dresses, and skirts fall below the knees. Shoulders are to be covered, and necklines should be modest. In short, please dress modestly, reverently, and beautifully!
It is also customary in the Traditional Latin Mass that women wear a chapel veil or scarf to cover their head as an added sign of reverence to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Although not required, women are encouraged to consider taking part in this custom! Please feel free to contact Isabella with any questions!
In the church, please keep talking to a minimum and refrain from bringing in food or drink (except for medical necessity). The Mass should last around an hour and a half. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Michael!
