Lisbon is the second oldest capital in Europe after Athens! A Lisbon Card might be a helpful if you are planning to see many Lisbon attractions and take public transport. Hire a tuk-tuk if you are not the best at walking around steep hills, cobblestone streets, and slick sidewalks.
1. Start off by touring the city's historic center that includes Alfama, Baixa and Rossio (neighborhoods). If you are up early (before 9) take the famous tram #28. If after that time it gets extremely crowded.
2. Visit the Sao Jorge Castle! Built by the Visigoths in the 5th century, explore the fort ramparts and enjoy the stunning views of downtown and the River Tagus. Go early or consider a skip-the-line ticket to avoid crowds.
3. Head to Miradouro de Santa Luzia. The views of the famous red and orange tiled houses are stunning and one side of the miradouro is bordered by the Church of Santa Luzia.
4. Visit the Tower of Belem, a stunning castle-like fortress on the banks of the Tagus River.
5. Loving the Portuguese tile? Visit the Museu Nacional do Azulejo.
6. Visit the Praca do Comercio, see the Arco da Rua Augusta, and shop along Rua Augusta!
7. Visit LX Factory for more shopping. You will find artisans selling creations, food shops, art studios and quaint cafes.
1. Visit the Pena Palace! Make sure to hire a driver or walk. There is very limited parking at the top of the hill and the hike up the Villa Sassetti Trail (connects to Moorish Castle and Pena Palace) is probably quicker than a car. Make sure to opt for an interior and exterior tour. The architecture and gardens are magnificent! Go early and buy your tickets in advance.
2. Visit the Moorish Castle. It is right across from the Pena Palace. An hour or 2 tops at the castle is plenty! Be careful while exploring as there are no hand rails.
3. Visit the Palacio de Quinta de Regaleira. This mansion took over 6 years to complete and has both mysticism, masonic symbolism with grottos and tunnels throughout!
4. Check out the beaches! One of the favorites is Praia da Ursa, which is a small beach surrounded by cliffs and large rock formations. From the parking lot is a downhill trail that takes about 25 minutes to reach the beach.
