Michelle and Dwight met in 2000 at the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church General Conference in Cincinnati, OH. They were introduced by a friend of Michelle's, also at the conference, who thought she needed a man in her life. Although Michelle was content being single, the two were eventually introduced. They got acquainted over a nice lunch, but neither thought it would go anywhere. If anything, they just thought they had made a new friend. Because they lived on opposite coasts, they went their separate ways after the conference, but they kept in touch.
Years passed and they continued to grow closer as they spent time on both coasts establishing their long-distance relationship. In 2005, Dwight proposed and the two were married in 2006 at St. Andrews A.M.E. Church in Sacramento, California. As life sometimes goes, things happened, and they ended up separating in 2008. Michelle moved back home to Maryland to be near family and friends. While they were separated, Michelle continued to pray for Dwight and for the healing of their hearts, as this was a tough time for them both.
After months and months of talking, praying and seeking God, they reconciled. The two began dating again in the fall of 2019. In 2020, eight years (a brand new beginning) after they divorced, things began to change. On the west coast Dwight began to realize he’d had what he wanted all along. Meanwhile on the east coast, Michelle had taken the time to heal and grow. This time it was different. This time there was a new determination, a new zeal for love, a new standard and commitment in the air. They both agreed that marriage was the goal. They both agreed that God had to be the center of their relationship.
Fast forward to August 2022, the two took a cruise to Alaska with Michelle's parents. Dwight had the ring for six months prior and was so excited about proposing. He rehearsed the proposal over and over in his head, but when the time came, he just couldn't wait. Grabbing her hand he showed her the ring, expressed his feelings and asked Michelle to be his wife for the rest of their lives. Somewhere in between her laughter and tears, Michelle replied with an enthusiastic “Yes!" And so, the adventure continues.
Who would have thought that they would end up back to this point? Certainly neither of them did, but to GOD be the Glory!
