Our Wedding

Charlie and Micka met at the incredibly awkward age of 13 in Mrs. Miller's Language Arts class. They immediately expressed interest in one another, however being only 13, that meant sidewise glances and overt, tactless flirting. Charlie worked up the courage to ask Micka out over the phone, which basically was the extent of their conversation for the entirety of their two week relationship. After the break-up, Charlie and Micka remained friends for the next several years, but with more capable social skills and slightly more tactful flirting.

How We Met

The stars finally aligned junior year of high school when Charlie and Micka realized the error of their ways and began dating again. With years of friendship under their belts, they formed a strong connection and quickly fell in love. Despite going to separate Universities, Charlie and Micka remained close thanks to the marvels of modern technology. At times, they have lived thousands of miles apart, but have always been able to fall back on their great friendship and love for each other.

Getting the Timing Right

With so many years of dating, Charlie knew he would need to be creative in order to surprise Micka with a proposal. After buying, borrowing, and re-purposing a ridiculous amount of extension cords, LED lights, and assorted electronic gear, Charlie developed a plan staged for Christmas Eve. Micka arrived home from church to find a path to her family's backyard laden with lights. As she followed the path, more lights lit up, each leading to a box with a small present and a note saying "follow the lights". Finally, at the back corner of the yard, a patch of four trees were illuminated with a small box on a perch at the center. As she reached the box and read the enclosed note, Charlie revealed himself, dropping down to one knee. Micka happily said "yes!" and the rest is history.

Emily and Micka became friends in sixth grade, but Charlie likes to boast that they met when they were in fourth grade. Since that time, Emily has been a true friend to Charlie and Micka and a champion of their relationship. Micka admires Emily's adventurous spirit,  positive attitude, and her kick-butt lawyer skills. Emily lives in Newport News, VA and works as an attorney for a defense contractor.

As Charlie's  older brother, Ben has been the groom's longest serving partner in crime. Over the years, Ben and Charlie have pushed each other to excel in music, movie quotes, comedy, and sister-based torture. His adventurous spirit and constant desire to prank someone are a regular source of entertainment. Ben lives in northern Virginia and works as an arts administrator for the International School of Music.

Benjamin Peck

Rob, aka Bobby, aka Rob-Bob, is Micka's younger brother and Charlie's go-to athletic companion on Knabb family vacations, including a variety of sports ranging from volleyball to frisbee to tennis.  Rob's formidable eating capacity has also been a key factor in protecting Charlie from the solitary shame that usually surrounds getting thirds in front of your spouse's family. Rob lives in Philadelphia, PA and works for Johnson &amp; Johnson as a chemical engineer.

Mattie has the pleasure to be Charlie's younger sister, which makes her a great comrade   in the perils of  brotherly love. Over the years, Mattie has become a great friend to Micka despite the fact that she sometimes joins in for the sibling torture. Micka is thrilled officially to be able to call Mattie her little sister in May even though she has been a sister to her for quite some time. Mattie is currently finishing up her Masters degree in Oboe performance in Cincinnati.

Grace and Micka have known each other since high school, but didn't really become close until they were randomly assigned as roommates at Penn State freshman year (I know, what are the chances!). Grace was such a good roommate that Micka and Charlie enlisted her when they moved to Philadelphia, which she may have quickly regretted given the onslaught of Nerf guns. Grace has the ability to make Micka laugh without even trying and is always up for anything. She  recently started a new job working for Department of Defense as a forensic scientist.

Jim is Micka's oldest brother, the proud father of the flower girl, Riley Knabb, and a key source of Charlie's wakeboarding knowledge. In the years to come, Charlie is also looking forward to absorbing Jim's prodigious knowledge of golf, grilling, and parenting. After performing on guitar at Jim's wedding, Charlie is excited to announce that Jim will offer a stunning, a capella rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" at the wedding. Jim lives in northern Virginia with his wife Katie and two children Riley and Owen and works in tech transfer.

Jim Knabb

Shannon happens to be Katie's younger sister, which technically makes her Micka's co-sister-in-law, but Charlie prefers to call their relationship  a sis-mance. Shannon and Micka became close while Micka attended the University of Minnesota, where Shannon took Micka under her wing and schooled her in all things Minnesota, cold weather, local music, etc. Shannon can always be counted on for a ridiculous story or a deep conversation. She currently lives in Minneapolis and works in eCommerce.

Andy is Charlie's friend dating back to fourth grade, where Andy dethroned Charlie as the best drawer in class. Despite this crushing realization, Charlie has managed to suppress his devastation and even went on to live with Andy in college, where they worked out, learned Tae Kwon Do, and talked music together. Andy lives in Des Moines, Iowa and works as an engineer for DuPont.

Andy Jarvis

Katie is Jim's wife, Micka's sister-in-law, Shannon's older sister, the flower girl's mom, and a fine woman in her own right.  Katie is responsible for Micka's love for Minnesota and all things lake.  Katie always impresses Micka with her scientific drive and dedication towards her family. Katie lives in northern Virginia with Jim, Riley, and Owen and works as a neuroscientist.

Katie Bittner

John Paul and Charlie have known each other since first grade, where they quickly bonded over their impressive talents at destroying army men and throwing mud in the general direction of a shed. Since then, their shared love of music, composition, recording, whiskey, and Lord of the Rings has fueled their friendship. John Paul lives in Swarthmore, PA with his wife Jackie and works at the University of the Arts as a Sound Engineer and faculty member.

Allyson and Micka met in their sophomore year of college when they both lived on the same floor of Wolf Hall. Allyson and Micka bonded over their shared taste for adventure and spent their time with activities like library hide and seek, hiking nearby state parks, and all things Penn State. Since college, Allyson has been a constant positive force in Micka's life who always comes up with creative things to do. Allyson lives in Bryn Mawr with her husband Brett and works as a media planner in Philadelphia.

John and Charlie's friendship took off with the founding of their high school band Fable, which won critical acclaim after winning the prestigious Avon Grove High School Battle of the Bands. Big deal, I know. In the years since, John and Charlie have collaborated on several other music projects, played too many games of Risk to count, and shared a generous number of generously-poured glasses of whiskey. John lives in Philadelphia, PA and works as a volunteer coordinator at the Friends of the Wissahickon.

Brielle and Micka became friends in eighth grade when they were in all the same classes (Brielle actually sat in front of Micka in Mrs. Miller's class). Brielle and Micka kept each other laughing over the years, even through soccer preseason, and have remained good friends despite always living in different states. Brielle lives in Charleston, SC with her new husband Timbo and works as a speech pathologist.

Riley, Micka's niece and Jim and Katie's daughter, will make her flower girl debut this May. Riley is an absolute joy who keeps her family laughing with her original songs and epic dance moves. This girl is definitely a thrill seeker-she went tubing for the first time this summer! Micka only hopes that Riley forgets that she wanted to dress up like the Little Mermaid when she walks down the aisle.

A shuttle will be available to take hotel guests to and from Tyler Arboretum. Please be outside ready to go by either 3:20 or 3:55 to depart. The shuttle will leave Tyler at 10:00 and 10:30. We encourage guests to consider the earlier shuttle times as space will be limited.

Travel

This is one of our favorite places in the area. It is incredibly beautiful and May should offer up some great spring colors.

Longwood Gardens

If you haven't visited Philadelphia, it is definitely worth a trip! There are a number of historical attractions, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, and several cultural institutions, including the Philadelphia Art Museum (of Rocky Balboa fame), the Franklin Institute (science museum), and the Barnes Foundation (art museum). Food-wise, you can always count on a cheesesteak from Jim's Steaks (the favorite for many Philadelphians), but you could also check out Pat's and/or Genos if you're looking for the classic tourist experience. Order by simply saying "whiz wit" if you aren't aware of that already. Cheesesteaks aside, you can find a variety of amazing food at the Reading Terminal Market or the Italian Market. Feel free to drop Micka or Charlie a line if you are looking for other suggestions.

Philadelphia

There are lots of great attractions in the Brandywine Valley, which is west of Tyler Arboretum. A number of wineries are scattered across the area, along with historical sites, museums, and outdoor activities. Check out the Brandywine River Museum for some great paintings by Andrew Wyeth and maybe take a ride down the River with Northbrook Canoe Company.
