Hazlewood Castle

Picture of Hazlewood Castle

Set in seventy seven acres of delightful parkland and landscaped grounds the fortified Knights residence Hazlewood Castle offers a distinctly different lifestyle experience in an idyllic rural location only twenty minutes from York and Leeds.

Hazlewood Castle was the family estate of the Vavasours for 9 hundred years since the Norman times and was first mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday Book.

The Baron Wars during the reign of Henry III saw the destruction of the original house and chapel. Sir Willian Vavasour, one of Edward I most respected knights, commenced rebuilding the castle in 1283.

Sir William was aware that the peace would be precarious and petitioned the king for the permission to fortify and crenelated his manor. The licence was granted in 1290 turning the hall of a Thane into the castle of a Baron.

The Chapel of St. Leonards was rebuilt in 1286 along with a license from the king to endow a chaplaincy. By favour of Queen Elizabeth I the chapel remained untouched during her reign and consequently the Blessed Sacrament has been undisturbed to this day.

Further additions were made in the 15th and 20th centuries which have enhanced the character of the castle and today Hazlewood still remains its aura of majesty and calm.

The castle opened as a hotel in late 1997 having been dramatically and sympathetically restored, whilst retaining and atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
