USA v. England

The differences between an English wedding and an American wedding

1. Bridesmaids & Groomsmen:

The wedding party tends to be smaller in the UK (2 or 3 close friends)

As opposed to the 3+ you would expect as the norm in America.

Like the American way, we have 6 bridesmaids & 7 groomsmen for our special day.

2. Ceremony:

In England it is tradition that wedding parties don't stand with the bride and groom for the ceremony.

In America, standing up at the front with the bride and groom during the ceremony is a big part of being a groomsmen or bridesmaid.

Stay tuned to see what we decide to have our wedding party do!

3. Invitations :

At a typical American wedding, you have one invite list who are welcome to join you to the entire day.

In the Uk, you usually invite closer friends and family to the actual ceremony and invite less-close friends or acquaintances to the reception only.

For our English side of the family, we have invited guests for the evening.

4. Bride Comes First?

In America, its always portrayed that the bride walks in last down the aisle after her bridesmaids. As the "Grand reveal" or "Big moment"

In England, the traditional way is for the bridesmaids to walk in after the bride holding her train.

We are looking forward to this moment. You can wait to see on our special day what we do for this!

5. Fascinated by Fascinators:
One of the most visual differences between British and American weddings is that its traditional in Britain for women to wear a hat or Fascinator to a wedding. Whether it's a big floppy hat, or smaller pinned barrette hat.

We would love to see our American side join this classy tradition!

6. Open Bar:

When having a British wedding it is commonly a cash bar.

By contrast, American wedding hosts tend to splurge on the open bar, or at least a few signature drinks.

For our day, we plan to have our own personalized signature drinks, Our favorite American drinks, and our favorite English drinks. Overall, some of the alcohol will be supplied at the bar, and a large portion will be cash if the drinks. (We have complimentary drinks throughout the day)

7. The Venue

British weddings are required to take place in a license location,

American Weddings can be anywhere, from a church to a random beach!

8. Structure of the wedding

The actual schedule of a wedding and how the components are laid out is very much structured in many UK weddings.

in America we don’t see weddings as a specific format, but instead leave it up to the individual couple.

As you can see, we are sticking with structure and doing it our English way.

9. Wedding Start & Finish Times:

Weddings in America typically start…well, whenever you want!
But often they start in the late afternoon or evening and go until around 11pm or so.

Weddings in England usually start around lunchtime or just before, and they go…ALL DAY AND NIGHT LONG!

So brace yourselves for an extraordinary wedding, as we combine the best of British and American celebrations that last all day and night!
