Herreshoff Marine Museum - Located on the former site of Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. The museum showcases the work of the Herreshoff Family which includes 5 Americas Cup-winning yachts, some of the first motorboats, and the plucky Buzzards Bay 12 1/2. JJ sailed 12 1/2s at the museum's sailing camp first as a student, then as an instructor, for 12 years.
Blithewold - Renown for their gardens the waterfront Blithewold mansion also hosts a summer concert series in their expansive lawns. The gardens are a favorite of Kathy Millard, Mother of the Bride.
Where to Eat?
Lobster Pot - A Bristol institution, serving Rhode Island seafood classics with a waterfront view and a great patio! Molly has been hosting at 'The Pot' since 2016 and Friday Night Espresso Martinis are one of our weekly traditions.
Basil & Bunny - Local sandwich shop specializing in vegetarian chicken sandwiches. It's JJ's favorite vegetarian restaurant, try their Buffalo 'Chicken' Wrap!
Sunset Bakery - A Strong family weekday lunch favorite, and a great place for a weekend brunch. Try their BLT and Avacado toast with hot honey.
Where to Go?
Newport Mansions - Newport was the home of dozens of Gilded Age Mansions many of which are now open to the public. There is a discount pass that gets you access to all of them, but if you can only see one it should be The Breakers ~ summer home of the Vanderbilts.
Ocean Side Drive - One of the most spectacular drives in the state Ocean Side follows the southernmost tip of Aquidneck island with rocky shores on one side and a series of stunning homes on the other. Of particular note is Jay Lenos home Seafair.
Audrain Car Museum - A relatively new attraction in Newport Audrain has a relatively small museum, that draws on their huge car collection to create curated displays with an interesting theme. The museum also runs a popular series of Cars and Coffee Sundays in the summer which are even better! There will be one at Fort Adams on August 11th.
Where to Eat?
CRU Cafe - A favorite of sailing crews (hence the name) Cru serves a delicious brunch and always seems to have a table. Great to combine with a morning at the Audrain Car Museum which is right next door.
Castle Hill Inn - Located at the mouth of Newport Harbor Castle Hill has, by far, the best view in Newport. Lunch is good but the view is SPECTACULAR so the best option is to get drinks on the lawn. Sit in an Adirondack chair, sip a Dark & Stormy, and watch the boats sail by. Can be busy so try to go mid-week or around 2-3pm to beat the crowd.
Where to Go?
Downtown Warren - Waterstreet and Main street in Warren are having a bit of a renaissance. There are a ton of great little shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. We've spent many weekends popping from one to the next.
Inkfish Books - Our favorite local bookshop, small but curated selection of books, and a great local gifts section!
Where to Eat?
Cafe Waterstreet - A favorite of Molly's specializing in Crepes.
Del's Lemonade and Taco Box - Located on the East Bay Bike Path these two little Waren take-out joints are right next door to each other an make a great combo. Del's is a Rhode Island Classic and Taco Box specializes in a taco with a twist that makes it a bit more like a pizza.
Coffee Depot - Another Molly favorite for a coffee and grading, or editing scripts. Located on Main Street it makes a great stop between shops.
Delektas Pharmacy - One of the few places left in Rhode Island where you can get a Cabinet ~ a Rhode Island take on a malted milkshake. 10/10 would recommend.
Where to Go?
Swansea Town Beach - Our first house was walking distance from the Swansea Town Beach and it is a bit of an undiscovered gem in Narragansett Bay. Not as impressive as the beaches in the Newport or on the West Bay, but it's a great place to spend a day reading and relaxing in the sun.
Where to Eat?
Rae's Cafe - Our favorite place for Iced Coffee and Breakfast Sandwiches. Not much else to say try it, its great!
Where to Go?
Rock Spot Climbing Gym - In the time before the Washington Bridge failure we used to climb at Rockspot weekly, its a great bouldering gym and very accessible for beginners.
Where to Eat?
PVD Donuts - There are a ton of great restaurants in Providence, but we seem to only ever go into the city for PVD Donuts. They have a rotating menu of all kinds of different delicious donut creations!
Rosalinas - Favorite of Molly and Katie's. Italian.
Ogies Trailer Park - Trailer Park-themed bar complete with trailers and a Beer list with a selection from each state. They also make a killer grilled PB&J.
